If this is a photo of the timeing of the pawel then it needs to be rotated anticlock wise or clockwise so the tabs would be east/west if the motor is faceing north.

@oldblue
Thanks for yr valuable advise
regarding pictures of modification, how the assembling is done & what to check.
I did all as u shown in the pictures.
The two notches in parallel on gear u showed in last pictures were done correctly by me initially & I checked it again as per picture i.e. perpendicular axis to gear.
The last kick was when I moved the vehicle as i thought that the gear is not aligned with shaft although it is pushed inward & has spring tension so while slight movement will push it in & thats it.
It locked & when I stopped the TLC & rotated the knobs CW to unlock, the hubs were free & since the Gears were aligned then with the shaft & Bingo It was locking & unlocking the hubs manually.
I learned a lot.
Bundle of THANKS to all for helping me.
I am on for offroading this weekend & shall enjoy it.
SHALL COMPILE ALL learned on Free Hubs & post it for future reference.

hub motor brushes got broken

Please someone help me…..i screwed up with the hub motor….
I have a LJ78 2l-TE and it won`t engage in 4 wheel drive at all…anyway I figured out that was due to not feeding vacuum in to the VSVs. So I directly pumped some vacuum by myself. (that`s actually by mouth… lol :D). Then the 4 wheel drive light came on in dashboard and also the front propeller shaft was rotating too, but not the front wheels.

Then I got to know my electric hubs are not working. Checked the power for both hubs. They were OK.
6-10sec + - and 6-10sec - + (thanks to the guidance of OldBlue. If u were not here I won`t be able to even think of doing these stuffs….seriously dude).

Then I took apart the RH Side hub first. At that time a lot of oil came from there. I checked the motors by pressing and depressing Hub Lock Switch, there the motor was rotating extremely slowly. Believe me, around 1 or 2 revolution for that whole 6-10 seconds. So I removed the motor`s front gear wheel set. They all had fully covered with oil and some grease. I cleared all that gear wheel set from petrol and fixed it to the motor and powered it again, then it was rotating bit faster than the first seen. But still 3-4 rev. per that whole 6-10seconds.
So I removed the back end part of that motor.(Where the power feeds to the motor) There too the armature had fully lubricated with oil, which causes to run the motor extremely slowly. Then I washed inside of the motor with petrol. But when I was going to reassemble the back part of the motor those two tiny fins with brush wasn`t come across those contact points of the motor. After a bit force those brushes got broken :bang: but leaving only those two fins. Anyhow I cleaned again the inside of the motor and made those two fins closer to make them touch the contact points of the motor and reassembled the motor. But sometimes the motor is working. Sometimes the motor isn`t working at all. May be they were touching the contact points but not in the correct way.

Anyway my questions are,
1. Why there isn`t coming any vacuum to the VSVs? Those vacuum generating from alternator ryt?
2. What do we need to put inside the hub? Oil or grease or what? In my case lot of oil came out when taking apart the hub.
3. Most important question is this. What to do for the motor now. Do I need to hold some brushes or just the fins. And how to reassemble that back end easily ? (can I take out the armature from the motor housing. There is a small wheel which can`t remove from the motor`s front axis)

front axle seal is gone so tear down and replace.
to hold the magnets back insert tiny wire through hole while holding the magnets back, remove wire once installed.

seems this is the questions you asked ....

Here's a thread from Redd for a DIY rebuild of the brushes.

Sounds like you are going to have to do that as well ...

guys.....no, that`s not what um talking....
um talking about the brushes in that little motor, not the main brushes There are two contact brushes in that little DC Motor, u know.
They got broken while um going to reassemble the back end of the motor.
Anyone had this situation ?

I broke several motors, but, vehicles with those hubs are plentiful in Ireland and England. If your looking for a second hand motor I would try ebay UK, dondeal in Ireland, and maybe ebay in Oz too, for breakers selling parts. no doubt you'll find one.
