would it be ok to powder coat the inside of the oil pan? i dont think it would be a temperature issue, but would the oil break down the coating?

Probably, but why?

The way I see it
Pro- the inside of the oil pan looks nice.

Con- if the powder coat starts to flake off you clog the oil filter and potentially destroy the engine.

There is no chance of corrosion inside the oil pan so what are you hoping to accomplish?

Well the truth is i had it blasted and coated months ago and didnt realize to tell them to not do the inside. Im not worried about corrosion for the obvious reason, haha. The general worry is it could chip and clog something. Then i read here that the owner of metric tlc here on mud blasts and coats all of his he sells inside and out. I trust the work my shop does. But i value your input, so thanks a ton.

I can't see any tremendous benefit from doing it. And there is a risk just like that stated above.

they come painted from toyota... if you already powder coated it, I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree with tucker most manufacture applies power coat instead of regular paint for more durability.

Where does it say that powder coating is more durable than liquid paint? Both "powder" and "paint" have very broad spectrum's. Yes a thermoplastic powder-coat may be stronger than an alkyd paint, but an epoxy paint may be stronger than an acrylic thermoset powder-coat. You can't just compare powder and paint, too many variables.

I was always told the painting of the inside of block was to smooth the metal for the purpose of allowing the oil to run down to the pan quicker I've seen this in the larger Diesel engines. It also holds heat in which is a bad thing... Looks pretty when you take it apart though...Lol

Electroless nickel plating:

Original oil pan. 26 years old. Gave up on painting it long ago. Didn't work. Just kept it coated with oil & linseed oil to control rust. Untold light years of mexican dirt roads and leaking gaskets and salt spray = this. It's looks like a giant turd... but the metal under the slime was in pretty good condition. When the pan came off, the old gasket was a permanent part of the flange. I knew it had me beat... so I surrendered.

Brand new oil pan from Toyota. All scratched up out of the box. Oh-What-a-Feeling. Was told they were all like that. Hello rust and grime-to-be in a few years...I've been down that road.. NOT AGAIN.

I considered powder coating, but did not feel comfortable with the sand blasting that had to be done inside the pan.
So I committed the ultimate sin: Electroless Nickel Plating

(& it will probably start rusting again soon enough, like the painted one ... but at least I tried)
