Howdy y’all,

I’m in need of some advice from the forum. I am going to look at an ‘06 LX470 tomorrow as a potential replacement for my 955 Cayenne. I have 3 young kids (4yo, and 2yo twins) and I need a bigger vehicle that fits 3 car seats, preferably in the second row (forward facing on drivers side, twins in center and passenger side rear facing for another year maybe). We have a Honda Odyssey for long trips but I also want to be able to pick up my kids from daycare without switching vehicles.

First off, does this sound feasible in a 100? I like the LX as it fits my budget ($18k) and desire for reliability/quality, flexibility (we will want to go camping soon), and I’m comfortable with Lexus’ of this era, having owned a few and worked on many (car audio tech 2002-2012ish).

The candidate has 226k miles, local Texas only vehicle, no accidents, maintenance records since new, TB at 202k, and lots of other maintenance in the last 5 years. The seller is asking $17,500. The market is a little hard to read on these as they are entering classic vehicle status. There are rust buckets, pristine low mileage examples, and everything in between. I don’t trust KBB for this, but the values are pretty low. Looking at BAT leads me to think the market is probably $15-18k, depending on color, location, history, etc. Does that sound accurate?

I have read on the forums and watched this to learn about common issues with the platform:

Any comments and/or direction appreciated!

Go for it. You already have the family hauler in the Odyssey. Buy something that’s amazing to drive like the 100 series! It’s big enough for your needs back and forth with kids.

Just for the hell if it, I added up my parts costs since buying my ‘98 early 2023. I’m at around $5k in maintenance and repair items, with big ticket expenses being tires, windshield, radiator, F/R brakes, and front suspension refresh. The only thing I didn’t do myself was a tie rod, because the shop was able to get OEM parts and swap in 48h to keep me on the road.

I bought mine just as kids were getting out of daycare. I guess it hurt less financially as a result?… Still less into it than buying a new car.

Update:

I went to look at the LX today. All three car seats fit easily in the second row. Check.

I looked it over…exterior, interior, engine bay, and crawled underneath. First the good things - it’s rust free, no signs of any accidents, and the seller seems like a really straightforward and honest guy. Everything works. The tires look great. It drove nice and the AHC worked fine. The second and third rows look barely used.

The less good things - the driver’s seat has some moderate wear (I’ve swapped seat leather myself, but still, it’s something to do), at least one valve cover is slowly leaking, there is a small coolant leak (pink coolant drops on the under engine cover), FL axle boot is starting to fail, and there are various small exterior defects (but most are small and all look expected for the age and mileage). The grom unit is only Bluetooth and front/rear camera input…no CarPlay. That’s it, nothing really bad to report.

We discussed the condition and market for the LX. I offered $15k and we settled on $16k. I’ll pick it up next weekend.
