This chart probably won't align correctly so it may be difficult to read, but here are the numbers of REGISTERED (license plates) vehicles for some of the categories of interest to us here. These registrations by year model are as of April, 2016, so that's why 2016 numbers are much lower than 2015.

NOTE that Trim Level isn't included in all lines. You have Year, Make, Model, and TOTAL units registered for all lines, but Trim Level is only included in some lines.

NOTE ALSO, that this doesn't mean that these are all the vehicles that exist in the US. It means these are the ones that are registered for use on public roads. The newer the vehicle, the more likely that it's still in use.

So does this mean that my 2002 is one of 4330 or so registered in the US or in the world?

In fact, I'll just go out on a limb here and do some more math:

If you bought the 100 series cruiser back when it was about 60k new, and drove it 300k miles, without considering any maintenance at all, you will have spent $60,000 + $57,857 on gas = $117,857.

On the other hand, if you bought that hundy brand new for $60,000, but only put 50,000 miles on it, you would have spent $69,642 on it. The remaining 250,000 miles you could have driven on a toyota camry that you would have bought for $30,000, which would cost you $22,500 in gas at a rate of 30 mpg. Coming to a total of $122,143.

Of course the new 2018 land cruiser's price tag of $90k changes things up even more. When you can still get a camry that now does 35mpg, even more argument to get a used land cruiser and just use it when you actually need it.

Anyone disagree?
That’s just too much man...

Celebrated 290k with a drive in the wilderness.

^^^^^^ Love that color combo. I only have 205K on my LX at present and I'm looking forward to many more trouble free miles. Will have 300 K on my 80 series pretty soon.

I don't disagree, but if I cared about fuel costs I wouldn't own three V8s and a 3.9l inline 6.

I drive vehicles I love to drive - if they're efficient, great, if not, great.

I honestly don't care about the dollars - if driving a Camry is somehow beneficial financially, I'll take it on the chin and enjoy my LCs.

Thought I posted this when it happened around Halloween. Maybe I didnt because it came out blurry...254,xxx now...wanting to break 500k.

2000 Land Cruiser, 100% stock with only some basic maintenance done since I've had it. Not quite to the moon yet, but we've got a good run at it. I just got 10.48mpg in town driving, lots of less than 10 minutes drives. After filling up, and driving (the same day I filled up) about 183 miles on the hwy, got 16.52mpg running about 60-65 mph. The D light is dim, perfect for night driving. I bought it with about 206,000 last July.

Joined the 300k+ mile club in my '05. It's at 302k currently. It has been to the Toyota Dealer at every interval of its life. Still going strong. I'm starting to do a little more preventative maintenance however. Still on the original ignition coils, heater Ts and power steering rack which are getting replaced tomorrow. I think I got a great one!
