I don't think of it as sticking out too far, the face swings down to do CD's & is a pop-off face too. The face of the volume knob is at most 1/8" further out than the console dividers & the slightly curved face sits recessed ~1/8" from upper trim at center, further back on each side.
If anything, the face swing button / pop-off once swung down is the upper left corner next to the phone icon, and it's nearly a delicate job to hit the button.
Cage ring went in first, then lower pocket (fits a standard Iphone 6 perfect, even sideways it sits in the pocket easy 1/2"+ to spare), facia ring over all that.
Has a USB socket that I just tucked in the glovebox (socket is on a ~24" cord) & comes with a mic for the 'use the phone in the car'-types. I didn't install mine, I'm the grumpy old man who just pulls over if a call is that important.
Still getting used to navigate my phone music library from face, but it's not too bad - pretty much intuitive using the 4 corner buttons around the source button, left of big display - tons of display option styles too, I'm a minimalist so small font will be what you see in night pic, you can make it ~3x larger, scrolling, etc.
Onboard amp is good (can be switched off for component amp), better than most brands - and tons of adjustable levels if you're the type with a outboard amp & component speakers & sub.
It's the flagship single DIN / non screen & would have been a $5-600 unit a decade back. Buddy runs a stereo shop, IIRC I was $225 taxed & installed.
I have a CDA-9887 that was $500 off webs - this is extremely comparable unit, just updated w/ Bluetooth & all the rest.
Alot of stereo for anything under $300 IMO.
