Hello,
This is my first post in the 60 series section. I am a new owner of an '84 FJ-60 with 290.xxx miles on the odometer. I have no idea of the history.

I picked it up for cheap, and its time to sink some money into the addiction. The body is straight as can be with very minimal rust. The frame has rust in the rear, but it's manageable.

According to the PO it sat for two years in some field. So when I got it Friday it wasn't running... I tinkered with it for about an hour and managed to get it to life!! I drove it around the block then it died randomly... It felt like it ran out of gas, but it has fuel in the tank.

I have no idea what a 2F is suppose to look like under the hood. To me it looks like the PO was trying to remove the emissions stuff, but quit half way. I'm not to sure...

Is this a normal looking intake? Or is there suppose to be piping to the inner fender?

I have no idea what this is or what is missing from it?

In the center of the picture it is a ROCK inserted in what looks like a vent tubing coming from the exhaust.

Sorry if these are NOOB questions.

Thanks in advance
Angelo

The first: Usually, yes. Plastic flex-pipe to an elbow very near the DS headlight.

The second is the smog pump, which is obviously doing nothing. I think you're right in that it's a halfassed desmog.

The third (exhaust) also has something to do with the emissions (it recirculates exhaust) but is usually found without a rock in it. It's funny, though.

As far as the emissions, there's a specific emissions manual for the 2F. It's usually pretty easy to find—all the manuals/FSMs (3) can be found around here after a pretty quick search.

Nice 80, by the way.

Have fun, pulled mine home from the 5 year front yard resting place. Daily drive now.

So I guess I'll desmog it the correct way... I'm sure a search with teach me how!

Thanks, I beat the snot out of the 80. It's my DD and wheeler. I am hoping to make the 60 my DD

Oh sweet thanks!!

Does it matter I'd the smog pump just sits there and rots?

Same thing with that exhaust loop? Will the rock be a good enough plug? Haha

Thanks

plug that exhaust better for sure haha. you can pull the air pump off and replace it with a pully, people who still need up and running smog systems could take it off your hands for a few bucks. awesome cruisers. oh, and in your third pic i'm not sure what you mean. if your talking about the big black part in front, its the carb fan and its fine. it goes on for 20 or so minutes after the truck has warmed up and turned off. you may want to check that the signal wire for that is intact, there are plenty of searches for that

I would replace the smog pump with a Jim C pulley. In the event something goes wrong with the smog pump and it seizes, the water pump isn't going to work either.

Haha, half ass desmog is right, as the guy that sold it to him, I can vouch for that. (the hack desmog was done by my brother though, I hauled it to Nebraska thinking I would do something with it and didn't)

I have to admit I never noticed the rock....that is funny.

Good Luck, I'm going to follow this to see how it comes together.

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter. Spray carb cleaner in the carb and work the butterfly back and forth, then slap in a new filter and see what happens. Mine did the same thing. Tons of gas tank sediment.....

Another thought, I believe there was a gas tank recall on these, and I don't know if this one ever got done. Might want to have the local dealer run the VIN and find out.

I called my bro last night to see why he did the hack desmog and he said the air pump seized, so, you should find it stripped out inside.

Tank recall is still open for 1980-1990 cruisers. You will have to check toyota.com with the vin and it will tell you about eligibility. Mine was already replaced and now has a sediment problem because of sitting 3.5 years... Easy fix though take it to a radiator shop and have it dipped. Should run 100-150 bucks.

Yes there was as a matter of fact! I just had it done on my 85' they put in a fresh gas tank and lines and new seat belt in the rear. contact the toyota national service center to find out. you may have to register your truck with them but thats pretty easy! pm me if you need any info on it.

Hear and believe. I just did a rebuild and put my gutted pump back on until I could build a pulley rig. It was running hot, I tried all kinds of stuff to find heat problem and couldn't quiet get it where I knew it should be. Finally found a pulley that fit and heat problem went away, dropped 30 degrees. If you can't build your own pulley system then get JimC's, he does a great job on anything he does and it's a good price.

It was a clogged fuel filter. That thing was nasty!

New fuel filter, fixed all the smog nonsense, did a baseline and she's running like a champ now.

Next thing is to do is the power steering, possibly a valve adjustment and go from there.

What would you guys recommend for the power steering? I believe I read that GM has a pump that is almost a bolt in.
