I have recently been looking for a middle of the road, non-restored, original driver FJ40. I have always been a Land Rover Series / Defender guy but am looking to branch out. My brother in law just picked this up at an auto auction and I was looking if anyone has seen the rig in the past or has any information on it based off the pics. He said he will e-mail me some details in a few days but I was looking to get ahead of the game.

The purchase ad I got from my brother in law says 1976 FJ40. I will let him know.

It's all wrong for a 76. the door opening says pre 1964. The turn sugnals are pre 74ish, seats are pre 71, pre 65 windshield frame. there's alot wrong with this truck, hopefully he didn't pay too much. It has cheap jeep taillights and is missing rear marker lights.

its got a mix match of parts from several years including jeep tail lights to round it all off.
72 or later hood, like jdc1 said early 60s tub, 70 to 74 turn signals, 69 or earlier front bib, windshield matches the tub era, and the list goes on.
Welcome to MUD though :flipoff2: (official solute)

Cant tell but looks like early frame too (rear crossmember).

All good info. As I am looking for useability as opposed to collectability is this worth considering if mechanically sound? And if rot free what is a ballpark figure worth of a frankencruiser? $7k?

There's still alot of details left out to make an accurate guess on worth. Does it have disc brakes, what drivetrain is in it, etc. etc?

Based on pics and the shortcuts shown, I'd have a hard time paying more than $3500. There have been some really nice unrestored and more importantly unmolested mid 70s rigs that have sold for sub $10k in the past 6 months. This one looks like more of a headache than its worth. Be patient, educate yourself and decide exactly what you are looking for and the 40 section here on Mud will help you to evaluate any potential rigs.

I take back my comment on the hood. It does look like a split hood, couldn't see it earlier and it's missing the hood spear, so it could be the correct hood.

Its a 61 thru 63 factory soft top fj40. Its been bouncing around for sale for a few years. Its actually pretty rare but has been molested and is missing alot of original parts.

I saw the rig in person today. Runs, steering is ok, and brakes. Looks like little to no rot. No top or doors. What worries me most is non standard gauges / no speedometer. It's a 3 speed. Inline 6 with Holley. The no Rot made me happy. Would this be a $7k FJ?

I've looked and can't find the threads. I think there is more than one. This cruiser has been passed around or up for sale for the last several years.

Doesn't make it any less worthy of a home, though.

I mean this respectfully because I have experience in overpaying for cruiser stuff myself: If you have to ask here what something is worth, you might want to hold off until you don't.

I think it was even in WA state a few years back......wow it gets around
