I ordered a mix of little cans (clear/black/gloss black) and cleaner, etcher from POR 15. I figure it will be put to good use eventually - there is some rust on underbody.

Burning question is - I have few chips which were not taken care of by previous owner (I just got the car).

Can I use the cleaner on the painted surface? POR 15 says - yes. I read a horror story fromthe guy who worked on 47 Harley and got the original paint messed up. It is given that in 50+ years paints got to be quite different. Still... any concerns? Should I make a solution with water vs. straight Marine Cleaner? What proportion?

I assume that etcher is out for the outside paint. Correct?

My thinking is - if I cover the rusted spots with Clear POR 15 - I could paint it with touch up paint and be done (the problem areas are small _ I just do not want them to get worse). Will this work?

Alternative is body shop and I would rather not spend money. If it is not perfect - it is ok, just do not want the truck to rust.

Any hints on working with POR15? Dos and don'ts?

I've been thinking of doing the same thing with 2 or 3 small chips that have rusted on my 80. I used POR15 on the axles of my 4Runner and really like the product. Prep will be key and I would think that you would want to use the metal ready (dilute acid) in order to kill the rust. Maybe you could dab it on with ear swabs to avoid damaging the existing paint? I was just going to use their normal black but clear might be a good idea?

You want to make sure that you are ready with the touch up paint within a couple of hours (depending on temp and humidity) after applying the POR15. If you wait too long (like overnight) then the topcoat will not adhere to the POR15 without using their intermediate primer. At 90+ degrees and relatively high humidity I was able to recoat my axles in 2 hours and to topcoat (POR15 chassis black), again, about 2 hours after the second coat of POR15 had been applied. I had no issues with adhesion between the POR15 and the topcoat.

I would also be interested in hearing from anyone that has tried POR15 for small chips and also hearing how it goes for you if you try it.
