Scottb4857,
Me first in line please!!!! My yearly flush is due NOW.

Only way to bleed without pumping the brakes is with the sst. I bought one on eBay awhile back, but have not been able to get the correct harness as they were out of production at the time. Just reminded me I need to check again. If I can get the harness was thinking I should turn the sst into a traveling loaner tool as it would just sit in my garage for months/years at a time.
This is very generous of you. I am very interested and would like to be added to the que. I have the FSM and it explains how to use the tool fairly clearly.

No. 2006 117k (though in general feel like the brakes are a bit weak... always have been)

I bet we all would be happy to buy the harness for you to thank you for loaning it out! I don't know how it costs, but if you let us know, I'd like to contribute.

Called OTC today to get a update on availability, was told now been pushed back to Dec 14. When I last checked 3 months ago was told August/September. If anyone has a line on the sub harness let me know and we'll combine resources. It is OTC sub harness "S" part number 09990-00480. The one place I've been able to find it online is handsontools.com, listed for $75 but they are also waiting on OTC to produce.

Sounds good!
Give me your paypal email, and I'll send you $25 to forward your pursuit. (Not having to take it in to the dealer or find a dirt road to skid around, would be wonderful!)

I emailed Beno to see if he can scare one up. He is one of our preference parts suppliers and never ceases to amaze me how he finds back ordered or NLA parts

Voted no. 2000 with 275k

2003 with 101k. No brake failure.

'99 LX with 251k. Voted No, with no total brake failure, yet. I do have a pretty squishy brake pedal though...I'll probably start with a brake fluid bleed.

Would anyone care to comment on a DIY brake fluid bleed? Would it be better to bring this to the dealer to be performed? I'm a fairly competent DIYer, but have heard of plenty of problems when bleeding brakes and clutches. Would hate to cause an MC failure. After reading this thread I'm thinking it's also time to do an MC rebuild!

Glad this thread was started, but it definitely has me worried now. I bought my LX 5 months ago and have done tons of maintenance on the engine and drivetrain. Other than pads and rotors, i haven't touched the brake system. With 251 on the clock it's definitely time to ensure I have reliable and adequate stopping power.

If not contaminated or the MC chamber scored due to contamination then the plunger rebuild should help. The "best" way is to have the sst, but if you don't flushing is not that hard if you follow the FSM and have an assistant. Have said it many times, my assistant was my 10yr old daughter. Only thing the assistant has to do is press the pedal down a few times (don't recall the exact number from the FSM) then keep it down on the final press. You open the bleeder valve for 3-4 seconds, then repeat the process until fluid runs clear. Flush order is FL, FR, RL, RR. Make sure you suctions as much old fluid from the reservoir as you can before you start. Or if you're rebuilding you can make sure it is all out. Also during rebuild make sure you have a clean work area for rebuilding - don't want to accidentally contaminate the new cylinder. Best of luck, it is really not that hard if you follow the write ups in the FAQ.

Also just noticed you're from Chucktown - if I ever find the sub-harness for the SST you'd be welcome to borrow it. Just a short drive up to the midlands for you!

Really appreciate that Gil - but won't take anyone up on it until I find somewhere to actually buy one. But once available I will get the sub harness and share!

well, at least we are now getting closer to 10% than 20% for the failures... sheesh...

I am curious from people who vote "No", what is the percentage that has the entire service records from when the vehicle has 0 miles. I voted "No", but I am a third owner. My LC has 211K miles. I have records going back several years, but I do not have all records from 1998. So my data is incomplete. My truck could have this problem earlier, I just dont know about it.

true of course but the big majority of the failures are after 100K so not likely to be under the watch of the original owner, plus given the cost of the repair I would think most sellers would make a point of mentioning it when selling. So maybe not a big effect. And I suspect most of the folks here who have more than one 100 have only voted once if they have had no failure, which would make the Nos underestimated a bit too.

150k on a 2000 LX. No issues that I knownof, but I have only owned it for 9 mo and have incomplete records.

No, 2000 with 191k

My vote was No - However...
Since I purchased the beast in 2005, there has been a pump noise that shows up if I use the brakes about 3 times.
The noise has a bit of a ball bearing sound to it... it runs for 30 seconds and then shuts down...

I asked my indy to take a look and he says its fine.
I now own a 2011 335i and going back and forth between the two vehicles certainly make me wonder if I have some brake issues.
The Cruiser brakes are mushy and it takes a much longer push on the peddle to get a response. Almost as if there is air in the lines.

I need to get the old gal into the shop and have them take a closer look.
