so I'm ordering a OEM rad from Dan along with all Rad hoses and t-stat and maybe a water pump. I will go pick up a bunch more Red coolant ...mines not that old but what the heck. want to do this next weekend or maybe the following. question I have is do I need to get a FSM for this or is it all going to be pretty easy. I'm a 1.5:banana: guy right now.
I know I do need one sooner or later but it is expensive and was wondering if i could wing this with out it.

You could download one, but everything you have listed is really easy....

The FSM, whether paper or electronic, is one of those things where once you get it, you think, "Why the heck didn't I get this years ago?!"

Your post makes it seem like your thinking is: The better a mechanic you are, the less you need the FSM.

I think it's more like: The sooner you get an FSM, the better you'll be as a mechanic.

P.S. Yeah, you could probably get by this time without it. but, if you end up having to post a "Real Time Help Needed" thread, can I say I told ya so? :D

Mine Is Falling Apart

On the FSM, just received mine, and it is already falling apart at the binding. Don't know if I just got a defective manual, and tempted just to rip out all the pages and put in a 3 ring binder......

Anyway, to your question, besides the job at hand, there is much you can learn from the FSM and, in the grand scheme of things, it will only cost you around $100 for the paper version. Go for it.
Regards, Joe

Baran, Is your fan clutch good? you might want to check it out and replace that now while your there. Chances are if you've never replaced it is probably not working well at all.

If you haven't done it already change your PHH while you're in there.

Thanks all I may just order it even though this job will be straight forward.(knocks wood)

I do have the blue fan clutch (PO) and my PHH has been swapped with the blue silicon and BFclamps.

Water pump out of all of those items you have listed is the most difficult on your list...but it can be done in about 6 hours or so...I've done it on mine...actually had to do it twice in one day because the gasket I used ended up tearing and it leaked again after the new one was in...so I had to tear it all down again and start over (the second time using black silicone gasket stuff, and it worked perfectly once it was set after 24 hours). It took about 14 hours from the start of the first try to the end of the second try. So, do it right the first time and don't be like me ;) You do have to tear down everything on the front of the block to get it out and replaced (all belts, some bolts here and there, adjusters, etc...). Much cheaper though than getting it done at a shop. The water pump through a friend who gets parts cheap was about $60, and the cost of coolant and gasket stuff everything totalled out to be about $100 to replace the water pump....not too bad in my opinion.

Wow, the water pump is really that involved? 6 hours seems like quite a project. Sounds like it is barried under a bunch of stuff. I really would want the FSM for anything that involved. tourqe setting and such. I might just skip it for now. I need to get the new Rad in ASAP. I have a hair line crack in the plastic top and it is leaking down the front and then getting pulled into the fan where coolet is getting flung all over the front of the block. sounds worse than it is more like some one with a spray bottle on mist is lightly hitting the area.

edit: humm looks like most of the work of getting to a water pump will already be done when I have the rad out....I think.

If I were going to replace the water pump I sure would want to do it when the radiator is out as long as I have to take the radiator out anyway.
The FSM will help you in getting the belts off so you can get the water pump out.
You have to loosen the locking bolt, then loosen the alt adjustment bolt before you get the belts loose enough to pull the fan. Other than that you will want the FSM for the torque specs on water pump and fan bolts.
