I plan to have Don, the master fabricator at FC Fabrication, design and build me a new rear rack. I am looking for the best racks out there and hope to take what meets my needs and build a very cool rack. I know at minimum it needs to hold a 35" tire, storage for camping gear, a mount for the Hi Lift and who knows what else.

Pictures would be appreciated.

Ideas appreciated as well.

I like the looks of mine and the idea of it but mounting a 35x14.50 tire on it weighs it down quite a bit. I guess it only matters if you're opening up the tailgate a good amount. Otherwise it works well.

Well you chose the right guy. Not sure why you're asking for design ideas, he comes up with the most functional and unique designs out there as far as crusier fab goes. Let him work his magic.

i am sure that this is not what you want but i mounted the spare behind the seats on the roll cage to balance the weight and mounted the tire jack above it and then i built a swing gate to carry everything else. i did not like the thought of all the weight on the rear. i can and have still carried camping equiptment on top of the tire no problem. but if you want passengers this is bad idea

I completely agree. He has fabricated my skid plates, sliders and corner protection. He is truly the best. I am just looking for ideas that I may not think of when giving him the objective...

I realize these racks are showing huge swampers....but, I prefer the spare to the side! Spares straight down the middle look like a J**p wannabe. One of the best distinguishing traits of the FJ is the offset spare.

Just my opinion...

I like the offset spare. Preferably to the driver side. Part of that is that my first was a 76 which had a driver side spare and I am used to it. Center and passenger side block the rearward view as you look over your shoulder. Also center does not allow you to build a large enough rack to hold a normal size ice chest. At best you get two small landing spots. Here's one shot of mine. 35x15 tire. It may not be pretty but it is home built and it works and the tire is sitting on a spare hub, rotor, spindle and bearings. I could have mounted the lockout hubs but I wanted someplace to put the TLCA sticker. :)

Here's some pictures of my Jeep... it's an ARB Bumper and is so beautifully made compared to anything else out there for the Wranglers...

When the FJ45 arrives in Dubai, I'm going to take some measurements... I'll either get another ARB and make some minor modifications to make it work, or fabricate something new taking a lot of inspiration from the ARB.

I'm really hoping the FJ45 tray and the Wrangler tub are close enough in width that this is workable... Alter the corners and the mounting brackets and done.

Some of the key features are the double shear hinge, i.e. there's a top plate and a bottom plate and it's bolted all the way through. This goes a LONG way to eliminate tire shake. This thing is SOLID.

The bottom of the hinge bolt has another bolt pressing into the side of it. This allows you to counter the sag of the swing-arm and make it swing in perfectly without having to lift it to close it.

It has a spring catch that allows you to lock it open when you're parked off camber.

It has a gas strut to make opening it just a little bit easier.

It has a slam shut latch, just like a car door would.

The Latch area has MANY adjustments so you can make it slam shut perfectly. Lots of slotted holes to allow for fine tuning.

The tire mounts is kinda like a trailer hitch in a 2" sleeve - it allows you to set the depth for the tire width / rim backspacing, then drill through and bolt them together to set the depth. Keeping the tire FIRM against the upright supports of the swing arm also help eliminate the shakes.

Massively complicated to build and install, but an absolute joy to use.

Some fun with Photoshop :)
