Please, Mechanic Charging a lot!!

If your mechanic is any good, that's cheap. Here in So. Cal., shop labor is generally between $75 to $95.00 an hour. The work on your list is going to take a while, plus the shop has to cover its overhead, try to make some profit, and warranty the work.

Is that a Toyota mechanic or a Sears mechanic? (apolgies to Frank Zappa)

Condolences on being a programmer, but you can get over it. I did.

Working on these old beasts is therapy for writing code. Start doing some of this stuff yourself, like the tuneup. The rest of the stuff is messy & some downright difficult.

actually Birfield DOES have a 2f manual http://www.birfield.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=77
but beware the hi resolution is rather large.

???I wish they did, but I can't find it. F is not 2F, 2H is not 2F, B/2B is not 2F. What am I missing?

$900 is a bargain for all that work!

just picked up a FSM on ebay for $30 + $5 shipping. very good condition, as well. worth every penny.

BluesBrother

Maybe I missed it, but where are you located?

Also, from the list you provided nothing in there seems to be necessary immediately. I would buy a FSM (nice to have really), and start doing the work yourself - if you have the time. The FSM is a great STEP by STEP document showing all you need to do. The only thing that looks like a PITA was the front timing cover seal, due to the amount of stuff you have to remove first.

Join TLCA (Toyota Land Cruiser Association). Make some friends, bribe with beer, etc.

And - buy Crapman tools at a minimum, don't waste your time with anything lower in the tool foodchain.

Oil pan gasket replacement shouldn't be that hard to do. $137.00 ?
Is it an expensive gasket? do you have to remove a cross member to do it? I'm not that familiar with your rig.

Gasket is like $18-20 for one peice. You do not have to remove any crossmember. Besides being messy this is a fairly simple task. You should save the $137 and do it yourself.
If you have no mechanical experience you might not want to tear into the trans/transfer case unless you had some help. I believe you could probably handle the tune-up; plugs/wires, cap/rotor, fuel filter/air filter, timing etc. these are all fairly simple plus you get to learn a little something about your cruiser.

Good luck-
