I'm refurbishing my front heater on my 74 FJ40 and was gonna paint the plastic parts as well as the fan/blower cover. Will plastic paint in a rattle can suffice or should I use something else? BTW what color would you suggest?

Search the members list for a AATLAS1X and look at some of his posts on FJ40 restorations etc. You may not be looking for that level of detail but Shane restores front heaters in FJ40s and does outstanding work which might be you some ideas

Coolerman - have you had any issues with fading? I am looking at painting some fender flares and was wondering if the paint would hold up to the sun and remain flexible...not crack if the flares are flexed a little. Thanks!

The plastic paint form ACE made by Krylon has held up in my cruiser fairly well. The key to painting any plastic is good cleaning. if the plastic is newer you need to use something that will remove the mold releasing compounds. These compounds will prevent anything from sticking well. A cleaner that removes wax, oil, etc. is especially important. A good place to check out info is on ATV forums as a lot of them spray their bikes with good results. I have sprayed mine also using an adhesion promotor afte careful washing. I didn't use a plastic specific rattle can paint. On older cruisers i doubt that there will be huge issues with adhesions if the surface is properly prepped and cleaned.

I use SEM products for mine. You will need a plastic prep for cleaning, a plastic primer then any type if paint. Their semi flat is awesome.

Well seeing as it's still wrapped in the plastic after I painted it, I have to say no, there are no issues with fading or cracking.

I sanded the whole thing to remove the 'dead' plastic, used JB Weld to fill in a couple of gouges, sanded that down, sprayed on the adhesion promoter, then the top coat. It's tough stuff. There are pics of this on my web site under the heater section.

I have used this now on my trailer. Wiped down the part with acetone, and followed the directions on the can exactly, couldn't be happier.
