I just started another thread on some transfer case issues and thought I would start a different one on a different issue.

I have never had pinion brakes before so these are brand new to me.

1. Do most rigs have pinion brakes on the rear or are front and rear ones common?

The reason I ask is that I have them on front and rear and when I have it in 2WD, the front one makes a terrible noise when I press the brake. Is this normal? It kind of makes sense how it works OK when the front axle is engaged but not when it is not locked in. They are rockwell axles if that makes a difference.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I am just learning about all this and so I appreciate it.

Thanks again!

Check for metal to metal contact on the front pinion brake. It should not make noise.

It's also possible you have gotten some gravel in there, but it should have washed out.

BTW, pinion brakes are not that great on the street if you are planning on much street use.
