Last night several of us got together and tackled our PHHs. A friend that's a Toyota MDT (Will Carroll) did mine, and another friend (Dave Connors) did his with me stepping in occasionally. Here's our lessons:

- getting to the tab that holds the rising metal pipe on the back of the block is nearly impossible. Will knew where it was and was able to get mine fine. Both Dave and I tried to get his, but never could. I think it's a blind thing and you have to be able to visualize where the tab is and where your wrench is going. Dave ended up doing his without loosening the tab, which ended up making getting the hose on/off a little more difficult.

- my best friend in doing what I could to help were long needle nose pliers with a right angle bend at the end. I was able to get the cotter pin out and spring clamp off using these, and eventually was able to rip the old hose out using them as well.

- Will is a skinny guy and both Dave and my forearms hurt like hell. I scraped the crap out of mine on the fender skirt trying to push my arm up by the block.

- Dave had a wrench slip and unforunately knocked the plastic top off a knock sensor. Turns out those sensors are WAY more expensive than you'd think.

So, I'm glad it's done and glad to have had the experience. It took Will about 1.5 hours to do mine, it took the combined retardedness of Dave and myself about 3 hours to do his. I am a mechanical moron and now I think I could do this myself (except for that damn pipe bracket), but it would take longer and I would have to force myself to be patient and methodical about it.

And anyone who tries to make a "How to" DVD of the PHH, be prepared for lots of editing to cut out the mandated profanity.

This is probably a real stupid question but...was it absolutely necessary to drain the radiator...or is there a way to plug it with something like your finger while you attached the hose??

I think you have to drain the radiator, no biggie just refill with new fluid.

Not worth it. You could spend some real time trying to get that hose on there. You really don't need to have coolant spraying you in the face and running down your arms while you're stuck in the wheelwell and can't move. Even with the stupid ass placement of the draincock, it's not even close to worth trying to do without a complete drain. Besides, coolant changes never hurt anything. Unless you're stuck on Toyota Red, then i guess they could hurt your walet pretty good.

Drain the radiator, do not remove the lower bolt on the pipe, remove the hose from the top of the pipe to the heater valve and pivot the pipe away from the block. Get yer wife with small hands to put the new hose on the pipe with a bit of liquid dish soap to make it slide easy, pivot the pipe back into place and push the hose onto the bib off the head. Piece of cake.......

This is not as tough as some of you guys are trying to make it. I did mine in less than 2 hours, including removing the DS tire, plastic skirt, unbolting the transmissin dipstick tube, draining the radiator, breaking for a brew and chasing down my engineer wife and talking her into lending a hand...:D

calling your usual a brew is a stretch.

No glass bottles around the pool or the work bench..

It is the hardest heater hose I have ever had the misfortune of replacing. I could not do it until I removed the bolt holding the vertical rigid tube, in order to rotate the tube and slip the new hose on. After I removed that bolt it was easy, and not that hard to re-install that bolt.

Cory was being awfully nice about my misadventures last night. Take one PHH, a mechanically disinclined moron like myself, a bad back and very little patience and you'll witness the cluster that was me under my 80. Without Will and Cory's help I would still be there messing around with that thing. I order the engine knock sensor today. Should be here tomorrow. Not really sure how I broke it yet but I guess that's just part of my pathetic attempt to work on my own truck. Price isn't as bad as I thought it was and I should be able to get it done before my 2000 mile trip this weekend.

I can see why for some people it's a pretty simple job. Watching a master tech pull it off in 90 mins while helping me and chatting with the garage full of people only added to the frustration of my 4 hour ordeal. It's done and 100k miles from now i'll gladly pay someone to do it again.

I got you all beat
All I did was order it up off the list here with the hose and clamps (cheaper then me driving to pick the stuff up with gas for the beast) .
A few days later it showed up I pulled it from the pkg and "installed" it into the truck center console in under a minute , no cuts, scrapes, and didn't get dirty at all :flipoff2:
