There are numerous chips online for sale. Most have a money back guarantee. Numerous reviews saying how their mpgs went up. Typical prices are around $100.00.
It's your $100. Give one a try. Maybe you'll be the first guy here smart enough to try the new hotness... If it were my money, I'd be extremely skeptical of any site that has tons of glowing reviews hosted only on their own site. I'd also be skeptical of any device that just plugs into the obdii port, because it doesn't work that way.

You don't see any gains for a $100 chip. If you do, pull it off immediately.

I'm talking about $1000+ chips from Racechip etc that we have run on the dyno and verified power gains and safety from.

The only thing a $100 chip works on is a common rail diesel and all it does is bump the fuel rail pressure or injector duration. Scary high EGTs and goodbye engine.

10% gain would be fabulous...
Right. So in the context of a Toyota gasoline straight 6 as found in a land cruiser, you'll need cams, competent head worker, probably some aftermarket pistons to bump compression ratio or skim as much off the head as you dare. Allow at least 10k to make this happen.
Makes a turbo kit seem like a good deal.

Swap in a diesel, you'll see 25-50% economy gain.

All these things have one thing in common. It'll cost you 5, 10, 20k, and you'll never recoupe the cost through fuel savings.
I have been staring at one of my '80s sitting out front and a mechanical pump 6.5 turbo sitting in the corner of the shop... and a 6.2 with a banks sitting beside it... really really wanting to do a diesel swap. It would seem to do everything I want. So far I just have not managed to have the cash, the time and the motivation all at once.

I miss messing about with my diesel landcruisers!
Lots of fun 😁 in there own way.

Definitely can't justify the cost for another

It's a difficult sell isn't it when you can get a decent FZJ80 for 12k and a HDJ80 in similar condition is 30k 😬

Yup. When i bought my current cruiser, it was $5k vs $15k for diesels with double the mileage
Brutal. I guess that makes me feel better about the price for imported examples. I assumed there was a huge markup due to the fact that we never got the diesels originally, but that honestly isn't far off.

Post up a link then. If it is one of those that plug into the cigarette lighter or even obd2 port there is physically nothing they can do through that interface than can impact the engine. Watch a video of them being reverse engineered and all it really can do is light up an led to let you know it's "working"

Since you happily admit that you will believe bull**** if it sounds like what you want to hear... Sure bud, I have just what you need. Cash app me $1375 and I will send you a can of magic s*** that will gain you 195 HP and 27 MPG. I promise it will work. If it does't I will tell you that you just used it incorrectly and ****- all if you want your money back.

Seriously ?

While you do not come right out and state it, it is pretty clear that you are not coming from a position of high expertise and experience in the subject of Land Cruisers. Not a damn thing wrong with that. Most people are pretty informed and knowledgeable on something. No one is highly informed and knowledgeable on everything. But you might want to listen to the advise that you came here to solicit. Even if it is not what you want to hear.

If there was a magic answer to gain power and economy in your Toyotas... why would we not all be using it?

But ignoring all that, here is a straight up answer to your question. Your '80 does not have a "chip" that can be replaced. IF you wanted to alter the ECU, you would have to replace it completely. Hardware not software. There is no "upgraded" ECU available. There ya go. End of quest.

I guess that you could try the magnets on your fuel line, the tornado generator in your intake or maybe the hydrogen brewery under the hood too. If you could find one of the old Jones Schneider DeKalb units that would certainly do the trick. But it has been years since I even heard mention of those. ;)
