I'm changing my name to stupid question asker but in the meantime where is the PCV valve located? I got one in my tune up kit but can't find it? I'm sure I'm staring right at it.

Right rear of engine if you have a stock 2F in your 1977 40 series...

Little curved tube welded to the sidecover...your PCV valve plugs into the top of it.
Or, follow the hose from the carb base insulator to the other end.

On the left side of this picture is the little tube from the side cover that was mentioned......it goes there:)

Great picture K91, thanks! Ok... so I don't have one. So I guess the PO removed it for some reason? Do I need it? Should I figure out how to put one back in???

It's an easy set-up. I would install one if I were you,and eliminate the threat of foreign objects getting in to the crank case. Look at the base of your carb at the manifold...you should have a 3/8 nipple there, with nothing hooked up to it. A vacuum line runs from there to the PCV valve. You may have to buy a grommet for the engine port if the PO took that off too.

Thanks Kurtnkegger, I followed the line and there's no PCV there so I guess I'll put one in.

joe40, there is also a rubber grommet that goes on also. Grommet goes on first then the pcv goes into the grommet and then the hose is attached to the top of pcv, other end of hose goes to the carb connection.

In looking at the metal tube on my 2F that the PCV connects to, I was able to get the petrified grommet out. Down inside the tube it is full of oil build up and appears blocked. What is the best way to clear this out? Can I put sea foam in that metal tube to beak down the buildup without causing damage? Is that tube open into the cover such that I should be able to push a wire freely through it?

Boy oh boy, this is an old thread….resurrected. So the side cover is your cam lifter access, if you push crusty gunk down the tube, you push crap onto the lifters and lower push rods.

It would be preferred to remove the cover, clean her up then reinstall the cover with a new gasket. Gaskets are cheap, and FelPro gaskets are available through Autozone, or the many many vendors here on mud.

Thanks Mark, what is in the back side of that tube were it meets the plate? Is it open or is there a screen or baffle? Anyone have a picture of the back side of the plate where the PCV tube connects?

I don’t know for sure, maybe @livinginthepast or one of the guys that live with a 2F could answer that. Mine is a 68 and the PCV comes off the oil filler tube.

Baffle

Anyone that’s pulled the side cover from a 2F know or have a picture or the back side of the PCV tube connection?

There's no short cut. It has a baffle covering the end of pipe, so gases can escape and residual oil can drain back into the engine. Remove the cover and clean it.
There's one for sale on ebay that shows a pic.
