For those of you who have bought/sold vehicles from/to people who live outside the area, how have you handled getting paid?

bought a piggy from fjben...bought a 45 from wdukes and both times i took a cashiers check from my bank when i picked up the cruisers...any questions and they were welcome to contact my banker at anytime...but hey thats how we small town folks do business...no problems with either transaction...they got the money...i got the trucks and titles!
good luck

My bank gave me a blank check for purchasing a car, when i got to the car and the current owner, I called the bank and they gave me all the info to finish out the check and the deal was done. If that doesnt work, a cashiers check or cash is the best option. Paypal will work, but if your the seller you have to pay a fee to get your money.

I would ask for a certified check. Then, they could always send you the info on the check (like fax copy, or email a pic of the check), and you can go ahead of time to the bank, and have it verified. How are they getting the vehicle? Are you setting up the shipping or are they coming to get it in person?

Bank check. When I bought my xcab out of Kalifornia I had the bank make the check out for 10% less than the agreed upon price. This was done in case there was a problem with the truck when I got there and I needed to negotiate the price. I had the balance in cash.

I sold a truck a few years ago to some guy overseas. We exchanged a few emails during the negotiations. He was buying the truck and shipping it to a friend in another country. He paid me my asking price plus $1,000 for my trouble and mailed me a cashier's check for the agreed amount plus an additional $10,000 for the overseas shipping. When the guy's agent came by to pick up the truck I gave them a blank check and told them to just fill in the shipping amount after the truck arrived at the destination. The final shipping was only $8,500 so I came out ahead on that part of the deal.

Nice guys to do business with. :D

He is the same guy that put me in contact with Natashi Mogashadon. Nat has 15 million US American dollars in a bank account for me. (Some tragic plane crash in the desert or jungle or something...) We've just got a few more details to iron out.

That must have been one heck of truck to be willing to pay that kind of money to ship it overseas.

I'm assuming everything prior to the :D was legitimate and after that was BS.

I'm talking to an individual who lives in San Antonio, TX. He has not decided that he wants to buy it yet but I want to have a plan on how to handle the money exchange if he does decide that he wants it. We're only talking $4,500 but I'd still be nervous travelling with that much cash. I have no reason to believe he's not a real person or there would be any dishonesty, but the distance between us complicates payment and transfer of ownership if there are any problems.

Part of the discussion will also include how to get the truck from here to San Antonio. I have a couple ideas but figured I'd wait to see if he proposes anything. He hasn't even decided if he wants it yet. I'd prefer to avoid having to drive it myself to SA and then fly back if just for the sake of time. The last SWA flight from SA to ABQ departs at 5 PM, which I think is too early for me to drive there and then fly back the same day. It's about 850 miles from my house to SA. That would be a really long day in a 65 MPH vehicle. I would be willing to meet him half-way in El Paso and then take a SW flight back here though. We can both fly between El Paso and our home cities for about $100 on SWA. I figure that would only take one day of my time and cost me ~$200 in gas and plane ticket.

Marc,
Has anyone ever suggested that you are a bit gullible?

If this guy decides he wants the truck, get a cashiers check. Its in HIS best interest to fly out and see the truck, pay you, and then drive it home.

No way in hell I'm driving sh%$ to anybody without cash in hand. What if he backs out. Your out gas money and a long trip. Make this guy come get it even if you drop the price a bit.

Do you mean before or after the the guy from Nigeria convinced me to write him a check for $5K after he sent me a cashier's check for $20,000 more than he was supposed to?

I wouldn't consider delivering a truck even half way. I would be more than happy to meet him at the airport with it, hand over the keys, etc. Also, if he is getting the cash out of a national bank, he could just meet you here, go to the bank, and get a certified check right at that moment, or pull out the cash.

He needs to come and get it, unless you get the cash cleared in the bank - that means time to go all the way across the Atlantic etc. Ask your bank how long it takes now. I got a cashier's check for the 80 and it was a forgery, but they didn't know that until after about 8 or 9 days. It went from one bank to another, then across to Europe...

I took traveler's checks to Austin when I bought my 80.

P.S. how many times have you been robbed so that you would be nervous carrying that much cash? Just do the transaction in your banik parking lot.

I believe this is a story that I haven't heard yet. Can you elaborate?

Same scam that I joked about in post #6. I think I remember you posting about it several years ago and I'm pretty sure you didn't get burned back then.... did you?

-Mike-

Nope - took it off the market for a week just in case is all...

I wouldn't be nervous if someone came here and brought the cash with them. I'd just be nervous that I might lose it if I were travelling from somewhere farther, like El Paso.

The general consensus seems to be that any buyer needs to travel here for the deal to work out. That way if he changes his mind he's out the travel expenses.

Regarding how to get paid, there seem to be a few good options. I'll wait to see what is proposed, if anything. I was supposed to get a return call today but didn't. I think AutoTrader will be next if this doesn't pan out. There's a bunch for sale on there for a lot more than mine and few for less but they are not in as good of condition. The high mileage and salvage title will hopefully balance out with lower mileage trucks with rust and not as nice interiors.
