I see some nice old 40s and 60s (55s also) that have paint that have a nice patina on them. I assume that they had light rust from neglect and then maybe sanded and cleared. How do people do these "paint jobs" where it keeps the old finish but prevents any additional rust and aging?

I am not interested in creating this look. Just want to know how when they find a old truck they preserve the truck and still have it look nice enough without doing a full repaint trying to make it look new.

Thank you. Thats really exactly what i wanted to see. Basicly it looks to be a proccess of cleaning and then a oil finish. I think i am more than a few years away from needing to do that but good to understand the process.
