I was looking at a friends older Nissan pathfinder and how it has a built in swing out tire carrier, I think it might be able to work on my FJ60 seeing that I wont be buying an ARB bumper with a swing out carrier unless they are priced in the ~$200 price range. i measured it out and it looks like it should work with the body lines of an LC, i was wondering if anyone has done it to a 60 series, and whether or not the body will hold up to a tire carrier from the pathfinder

i have one off the exact same type of car only mine has a jerry can holder on it aswell.. theres no way the 60s shell will hold the weight, it will pull the bolts through the body so itd need to be braced, and even then the hinges are designed for the curves of the nissan and its different to the 60s. i have an idea im going to try when i get back from overseas so il post some pics in this thread if it works!

keen to see what you come up with!

dang, i was hoping someone wouldnt say that haha, im interested to see your idea, and ill be working on mine once i pick up a tire rack from pick n pull plus some other odds and ends for my cruiser. any ideas on bracing the body? if thats too time consuming, i might try making something on the rear bumper and bracing it

Im going down the route of cutting off the top hinge, reinforcing the bottom one and bracing my stock bumper with a mount so i dont have to hurt my 61s rust free body :D

that would not work.

better off starting from scratch or using one of the commercially available single hinges like swingout bumpers use, the Pathie's are far to weak to be used in that manner, reinforced or not.

I'm not familiar with an ARB rear bumper with tire carrier for a 60 series. Does such a thing exist? Where can I get one?

Ahh this thread makes me miss my 1995 Pathfinder 5spd 4x4.....best damm truck ever! Sadly rust ate her up to the point where she was no longer safe to drive. Also I had the exact same spare tire carrier, it worked well in the 16 years I had the Pathy.

Jump to conclusions much?

I will make it work

I'm sure you could completely re-engineer it to work by replacing the hinge and bracing the bottom arm of the swingout. The tire mount is already too low and would need to be relocated on the swingout as "Battlewagon/Cruisified? did, but if you mount it off the bumper it will be at least 5" lower. You're going to need to fortify the bumper at the mounting point, not to mention the fact that the mount is cast as radius, and your bumper is not. I'll also toos in my opinion that it would look hideous.

I don't say this to be mean, just to save you time and heartache for what would probably turn out s***ty. Using the Pathie swingout mounted on the body seems like a decent idea for a trail beater but not a pristine rig or the weak of heart.

But if you do it anyways, post lots of pics.

well eventually ill make the 2 hour drive to a pick amd pull to get the swingout, im removing my rear stock bumper anyway because of a major dent so a new one is going on there and then to goof off with a mount for the spare

cool, do you have a welder? I think you definately have to relocate the mount, ala:

Honestly, it would be just as inexpensive (200) to rig up a rear bumper out of some c channel and weld a swing out onto it. Get a buddy who welds to help or a loal fab shop to do one up. I for one would never think of having the body of my van holding a spare (vibrations etc.). It would just rip everything to s***.

Some 80 guys have retrofitted the oe jdm carriers to their vans but they have also reinforced the body using the oe reinforcement plates that fit on the inside of the D pillar. This carrier matches the body lines and is designed for an 80 which is not the case here... I still wouldnt trust it to hold anything bigger than a 33....

Yeah rookie.
That "B/C" dude is a butcher anyway.

why don't you go light a candle for him?

thats why im thinking of mounting the brackets onto a pillar off the bumper instead of the body. i had noticed the thinner body panels compared to the pathfinder. i will have access to a welder in the spring so rock sliders will be fabricated then in addition to a modified rear bumper
