Hey all,

I have a 1/79 FJ40. I am replacing the parking brake cable with a new OEM cable. When I was doing the disassembly for the replacement i noticed two slightly disturbing things:
1. The threads for the backing plate bolts were VERY lubricated.
2. The were LOOSE.

I remember applying threadlocker to the bolts during the rebuild, but it seems that it was done to no avail.

My question(s) for the elders, gray beards, tribal knowledge holders:
1. Since it appears that the threads securing the parking brake backing plate to the transfer case are not blind, and appear to be open the lubrication of the transfer case, is there a way to make sure they don't work themselves loose again. Was my original assembly process flawed? It should be noted that I am running an ORION transfer case.
2. Is there a published torque for these bolts? I used the standard torque for thread diameter and pitch stated in the back of the FSM.

Thanks,
Chris

Not true, they are blind holes.

I've never used locktight on these and have had no issues, seems like some blue locktight should keep them from coming loose if it was applied correctly. Maybe the holes or threads were not clean when assembled? Locktight likes dry and clean threads in both the threaded hole and the bolt.

It should be noted that I am running an ORION transfer case.

Does not matter for these, you use the stock bolts and output housing. Nothing different for the Orion

I think there is a torque spec for these, but don't think it would be different than the standard torque for a 8mm bolt.

Was the oil from a leaky seal or gasket?

Thanks for the feedback. I will get a better look at those holes. In any event, I'll clean them out and reinstall the backing plate with clean fasteners (w/ blue loctite). Hopefully an isolated issue.

No leaks though, so I am not sure where the problem originated from.

Thanks again!

you could safety wire them together for that classic industrial look lol

Nice!

I just reinstalled everything. Looked more carefully, yes the holes are blind! Doh!

Cleaned them out. Cleaned the bolts with brake cleaner, new lock washers, and blue loctite. I'll monitor it.

Thanks for everyone's help.
