Some jackass cut into my lane, his ambition outweighed his talent, and he kart wheeled his motorcycle right in front of me a little while ago,

Had no out to my left or right so just mashed the brakes and hoped I didn’t run his dumbass over.

ABS did its thing, surprisingly well for such a heavy vehicle, the seatbelt tightened up as it should, after releasing the brakes the seatbelt loosened some (normal), but then motored (fairly loud) back in and got real snug, for almost no reason, then released.

Totally caught me off guard and never experienced anything like this before.

Almost seemed like a malfunction or, maybe that’s how it resets?

Any insight?

Thankfully I haven't had to stab the brakes that hard and haven't experience the belt snugging up like that, but I'm guessing that's something of a reset. Since it's sort of a ratcheting mechanism, I bet it has to do a couple weird things to let it release.

Does the manual say anything about it?

Normal after the belt did its job. It’s just resting itself.

There are pretensions in the seat belt mechanism that use some sort of charge (it's explosive whatever it does and causes seat belt assemblies to ship as hazardous) at least that's what I learned being a toyota dealer parts counterman. Not sure what the criteria is that makes the charge activate but I know its called a pretensioner. Maybe that activated during your situation. I'd look into that and you may need to replace the seat belt assembly if that charge went off. Just speculation until further research is done on your part.

Thanks for the info! Very interesting

This was definitely mechanical, gears driven, obvious noise.

The noise you heard could be the pretensioner engaging, it tightens the belt during sudden stops using a small charge. If it went off, the seatbelt assembly might need a reset or replacement.

I used L&D Solutions for my seatbelt repair. They were awesome! You can ship your belt to them with a label they provide, so it’s super convenient. If you’re thinking about getting it checked.

Stay safe out there!

Sounds normal to me, mine has done it twice, both times when deer jumped in front of me. Complain all you want about the PCS, it saved the front of my truck both times.
