So it is that time of year before the roads get salted. I want to paint everything underneath with some rustoleum. My situation is, i planned on tagging everything with a wire brush then squirting everything off, and then rattle canning away all day. Is that enough prep, should i prime, is there anything i should not paint? I know this is probably a newby question, but i would love some advice.

Post some pics of the current state.

My rig is from the salt belt so the surface rust was pretty horrific. My OCD for the LC would not allow this. I ground, sanded, drilled, tapped, washed with a strong grease removing base (POR15 Marine Clean), prepped with POR15 metal prep, and nukes every nook and cranny with POR15. 40 hours later I'm very happy with the results and can now sleep at night. Would I buy a salt belt rig again, hell no, but it looks great again.

Long story short, I highly recommend POR15 products, especially if you live in a corrosive environment.

This should give you an idea of how it looked before x 1000.

Good job! That could not have been anything better than a miserable process!

I need to do mine! Geez it would be oh so nice to have a lift.

I'm sure Supra88 took more time and did a overall better job. Mine didn't look to bad, I didn't have any rust, just wanted to hit the places that take the most beating offroad and had no paint on them

It's trashed again, all that paint is somewhere in URE

i dont have 40 hours of prep time. Any consensus on what the best option in between? Will a brushing, power wash and paint do the job? Spresso, you have seen a few pics of the underside of my rig, what do you think?

I will take and post pics tomorrow.

Other than the occasional Isocyanate mist in the eyes, a sweaty respirator, perpetual POR15 tattoos, and showers of ground off rust particles, it was tons of fun!

sounds amazing!! As previously said, a lift would be amazing.

I am just finishing up the same process... except I used the Eastwood Pre, Rust Converter, Rust encapsulator, and extreme Chassis Black. I also rebuilt the entire suspension front and rearreplaced all bushings, etc.I have a lot more than 40 hours.... but, with the exception of the exhaust, everything looks brand new... for now.

Yukon,

An angle grinder with a steel brush wheel will make quick work of the surface rust. For the sake of time focus on the large flaking off pieces. After a quick wash/dry nuke it with Rustoleum. Done. Repeat in the Spring.

Nice!

I will say this - these rigs are built with some serious steel. All of the frame/component rust was purely surface rust and would likely have lasted another 15 years without a problem. But as Land Cruiser owners this is not acceptable!

Did my 04 LC underbody last year. Done by my mechanic - so it was on a lift. We both wire brushed and then he spray painted with 3M underbody. Took about 3 hours total if I recall correctly. I looked under the car recently - it definitely needs a fresh coat. This is Massachusetts - thank you very much!
Any thoughts on what not to spray paint (besides the exhaust)?
I got new to me GX 470 - car was in Florida most of its life and is almost perfect underneath. Want to spray paint it, but want to make sure that I do not paint something I should not.
