I need to get some paint (decided on painting vs. Powder coating)
for a set of sliders that I will be installing soon...since they are new, I will need to prep the surface before painting...

I'd like to get good results...so what are my options on paint?
I hear from others that Rustoleum paints do a good job on metal.
and others say POR15 is a good rust preventive coating...(is this easily available at DIY centers?

any comments?

I vote for the rustoleum. It is very tough stuff. Give it a week to two to dry before taking it off road though. But the stuff has been stuck on my hand for a week now and I can't get it off.

Also it is easy to apply and they have a lot of color choices in the spray can. If you want a nice finish on sliders that is going to be the easiest and best way to do it. Not to mention they are for sliding so they won't be pretty for ever but Rustoleum enamel will do a great job holding up.

Just prep the bare metal with some 180 and it will have no problem adhereing.

It should go without saying that after the metal prep with sandpaper that one should clean it thoroughly. I like to use MEK myself, but I'm sure acetone or some other serious solvent would do the trick nicely.

Rustoleum PROFESSIONAL. It's in a Chrome colored can, and is Very Durable.

and on sliders you will probably be putting additional patch coats on after you wheel.

Thanks for the tips...I will go with Rustoleum....and prep the area before hand...

yah on steel you can use a 40 grit to rough it up. Clean it very well with some soap and water. I use the POR-15 Marine clean. Then the metal ready to prep it for paint.

Steel can be soo dirty and that makes the paint not stick.

An acid wash with muric acid would also clean them well prior to paint. Once dry brush it on.

I used Rusto on mine. Super hard after it dries, but be honest, if its for a slider, its getting thrashed and repainted soon anyway.

Don from FC Fab use the OSH paint on all his work. I have it on the sliders for my rig and one of my club members used it on his entire roll cage. Holds up great and looks good.

The only thing, other the dry time, that I don't like about the Rusto, is how many cans the spray button goofs up and either fills the top of the can full of paint and then drips, or just stops spraing. GL

I've used rust bullet black shell and it is the most amazing paint I've ever seen. It is super hard and tuff. But rustoleum is great stuff. However, when I used rust bullet, I cleaned the metal with rust bullet metal blast and that is great stuff. I would clean it with some of that before painting.

Rustoleum Hammered Paint.Wipe it with Acetone.Spray.Shot my rear axel shaft 3 years ao and it still looks perfect. You can shoot this over surface rust and it hols up fine. The "Hammered" refers to the finish. It's not smooth.I like it.

X2 on the "Hammered" look. I love it. I just painted the front skid plate for my 60. I love the look of it.
