How do I paint over a frame that has been hot dip galvanized?

The guy at the coating place said they would "profile" it for $0.08/b which would be about $25 and I would need to paint within 2-3 days after rinsing with water. Is this like an etch to allow paint to grab?

Also, all I need now is some black semi-gloss paint. I was originally looking at zero-rust, po-15, chassis black and they all say to put a 2 part epoxy over galvanized metal before using it. Based on that, Can I just lay down some rustoleum or something cheap to get my desired color?

I am pretty sure the dip they are talking about is an etching mix. I would do this then an etching primer and paint with matching paint.

But then again, you could leave it bling bling silver like I did :D

Any pictures of the frame after assembly?

if the frame is galvanized I would get some paint like tremclad and paint it on. They make a primer for galvanized metal.

POR will not stick without sandblasting. Which I would not do to this nice new finish.

Other option would be powder coating.

Spray as much paint as you can inside, and roll it from side to side, and stand it on end to drain the paint out.

I like the idea of Rustoleum (Tremclad).

Is this the correct primer for galvanized steel?
It also says the only difference between the 'stops rust' and 'professional' product lines is the drying time. Should I stick with the 'professional' product line?

The professional comes in rattle can and gallons.

Project60, in my build up thread - all the black paint ive been using under my 60, that's the Rustoleum professional flat black.

from Home depot.;)

Thanks guys. I will stop by the store this weekend and take a look at the selection and read the cans.

I am not too concerned with "rust proofing" paint as the galvanizing will do most of that. I just want a black chassis for not too much money in paint.

this is the primer I was thinking of...

I thought there must be the rustoleum version at home depot or what not.

Then top coat it with semi gloss or full gloss black.

I had my 40 frame hot-dip galvanized and then I painted. Pics and some paint discussion in my build thread.

Waorani, thanks for the tip. I copied this out of your build thread:

I went with a Rustolem Industrial DTM Urethane Mastic topcoat that I ordered from MSC. From the specs it superior resistance to chemicals, weathering, etc, etc. I also used Rustoleum's 2-part Industrial Epoxy Primer which was recommended for galvanized metal. If I had it to do over again - I'd probably just go with their Industrial Epoxy topcoat. The Urethane stuff seems to chip a little too easily.

If you have the frame galvin, is paint needed? Is it simply for the look of black paint on the frame, or does it add any protection?

I've heard 1.5x

I have heard that painting over galvanized steel is 1.5x the protection.

That means if the galvanizing were good for 10 years and the paint were good for 10 years (alone) you would get 30 years of protection. I did read that on a galvanizing page, so take that for what it's worth.

I wanted the ease/protection of galvanizing but not the look (didn't want anyone to think it was a Land Rover!!). However, at the rate I'm going on this project - its in no danger of being exposed to the elements anytime soon!

How about powdercoating the frame?
Powdercoating is one of the few things that will effectively stick to galvanized steel.
