Bondo makes 1 Step rust barrier paint and I painted it on the 40 frame in an effort to get this baby rolling a bit quicker. The finish came out glossy and I did not like it so we tried to blast it and start over. No can do. Tough stuff apparently. Looks like crap but tough as nails. Barely cleared a 6"X2" strip after quite a bit of blasting with an average blasting setup. My thought now is to paint over the 1 Step with flat black and get the result I want, or completely start over and have the frame blasted by a pro with serious equipment. Will I need to etch the surface as is before painting? I have no idea if paint will adhere well to the 1 Step.

Any of you experts out there have an idea?

I've never used 1 Step but I would ASSUME since it is now dry you would need to at least rough the surface, and maybe even add a light coat of primer before flat black. Is a glossy frame really that bad? It might not be worth the trouble when you can't see much of it later on.

If that stuff is that tough, leave it. Protection is what you are looking for, right? Don't worry, the frame will get dirty and the paint will lose it's gloss over time. Cant look THAT bad with the body on.

I would say hire a pro. Start over. Trying to fix other peoples mistakes, even your own, is not the way to go.

In the end you will be much happier having a nice clean frame vs. cobbled together systems. Whoever you hire, make sure you set a firm price and agree on what paint system you go with.

Otherwise have it blasted , and you can prime and paint it yourself.

contact the mfg of the paint you use and tell them what you are proposing, they will let you know if the topcoat is compatible. Then, scuff the existing paint and wipe down, topcoat. As long as the bottom layer has good adhesion so will the top layers if you do the prep right.
