I have a small leak on my P/S pump and was wondering if it’s worth rebuilding. With the huge price difference between a new pump and a kit I sure would like to rebuild it. I have about 100K on the pump and the fluid has been serviced over the years. Does anyone have any experience with the rebuild? How many  for the rebuild job? How about removing the pump?

I was thinking of trying Lucas P/S stop leak first. I have used it in the past on GM vehicles with good results but what about a Land Cruiser. Is there any reason I should not?

I'd sure try an additive before a rebuild at your low miles, unless there's an incompatibility issue. I would be surprised if there is. Ask the manufacturer of the additive.

I had good luck(as in it has stoped leaks or greatly reduced) with Gold Eagle brand of stop leak stuff, its like $8 for a bottle.

Phil,
I've used the Lucas P/S stop leak and it worked on a Jaguar steering system. If it works on the world's leakingest car, it will fix a Cruiser if a stop leak of any brand is going to work!

thats funny :D

The rebuild kit is an order of magnitude cheaper than a new pump. What is the source of the leak? I would rebuild it properly and not use stop leak, but it's your rig. The pump is easy to remove.

I have been chasing this slight leak for a while. The reservoir is seeping also but I have one coming from LAGWAGON soon I hope. The hoses are good. I did the clean everything with brakeclean making sure everything is dry. Drive it and looked and it is the pump. It is slight as previously noted when cleaned it takes 2-4 days before any fluid appears on the ground and then its only about 2" dia.

Phil...

I did the rebuild a few months ago and completely stopped the leak that I had. The FSM breaks it down really well. I wouldn't worry about measuring all the blades and such unless you're not getting the assist that you need. There are so many little rubber bands in there that it's easy for one of them to let loose. Just make sure that when you take out each part, you replace the seal on it and then file it in order. Otherwise you may have it all back together and notice you replacement pack still has one band. I actually did it twice as I discovered a problem in the housing. I've still got the spare so if you lose any parts let me know.

I understand the pump is leaking :), but what part of the pump? The main o-ring where it mounts to the block or possibly the little o-ring under the inlet pipe? You don't have to remove the pump to do the inlet pipe o-ring.

I used Lucas to try to stop the p/s leak I have. It still leaks. I have 152k miles now.
How do you guys even see where the p/s is leaking. No room to look.
