Well here she is, old but new to me and with a bit of work required but all in all it should be a fun rig.

I am going to try and pace myself a bit on this one....first thing is to take care of some of the original owners stuff like de-stickering it.
Then I plan to enlist Travis of Safari Pacific to help me install 4 bucket seats.
Then of course a fridge is a survival item here in the desert southwest.
And then we will see what I NEED vs what I WANT.

Oh and this rig will be staying here in the US with my older son Nathan when we move to Australia next year. But at least this way I get to practice shifting with my left hand :)

Looks like a good start.Andit is good that it will stay here.

First day of the build....and before I get to the photos I gotta say that working with Travis of Safari Pacific is a hoot...of course he is a friend but this is a paying gig. Now that means that I get to toss in my ideas and he gets to tell me when I am flying off the deep end :)

I have always said that one of the first thing I would do with any new rig would be a fridge, and true to my word here is my National Luna from Equipt trying out a possible location.

Next on the list was yanking the very old & tired factory seats and start figuring out where & how to install 4 new bucket seats.

Here is Travis testing out backseat height, of course it will be forward facing.

Next is testing out the front seat setup.

Once Travis had all his measurements down it was quick & easy for him to work out the materials list and have a design worked out.

That meant it was time for me to get home and start on some interior teardown and cleaning.
There is a bunch of room to work with and before I fill it up I am thinking of some insulation/sound deadening layers....any thoughts/experiences out there???

Actually pretty clean under the floor mats and other than some surface rust all is well.

Look at all that space to work with inside the walls & doors.

It is always good to get the family involved and here is my son Martin lending a hand.

I'm not sure what you have for sub-floor insulation in the US but here is Australia we have product that's a reflective foil type, it's basically a silver paper attached to a earthmat type material and usually has a ~R1.0 rating. I've used it in one of my cars as a sound deadened / insulation and it worked well. Just glue it to the inside of your outer cabin panels & doors.

we call it dynamat. works like a charm for heat and noise. I think if you get the dyna mat xtreme it has the adhesive already on it so you dont have to roll glue down

Clean out everything. POR the floor and wax spray the inside of the panels and your laughing.
Looks like a cool truck to me.
I just saw my first troopie for the first time in person the past weekend. LHD to boot.
Should be for sale in the next little while too. I'll be posting it on mud for a friend.

disagree with POR anything ...

a good quality paint and primer would be my recommendation, then a foil over the floor to deaden the hollow drum sounds and a carpet or vinyl mat over that...

really it stops rust pretty good if you clean it up nice by sanding and prep

and there in lies the problem ...
it stops it "pretty good" but you can't repair the metal once the rust starts under the POR.

NEVER use anything on a vehicle you want to keep a long time that you can not repair easily and properly.

POR is so 1995.

but, each to their own,
me, i won't use that s*** on anything.

sand blast
epoxy primer and color coat
or
ZERO RUST paint

that way you can touch up as the rust comes back before you get holes...

Dyna mat is hell expensive here (~$100 1m square) where as the sub-floor insulation stuff is about a third of the price or less (especially if you can get left overs from a builder)

excuse my ignorance what what is POR?

POR-15 is a anti rust paint.

what about electonic anti rust kit? not considered or not used over there? My 80 had one in it for 7 years.

Now putting one in the BJ75 and the Volvo.

CAAT systems one.

We have them, I just ordered a pick up and the dealer tried to sell me on one of those electronic anti rust devices which included some sort of treatment applied to the paint as part of the package, gave me the spiel and still not convinced. But thats just my opinion.
With the salt they dump on the roads up here, I've always had good luck with getting vehicles and equipment oil sprayed with Krown every couple of years. Even the electrical connections get the oil protection, which I don't know how, or if that would work with the electronic gadget because of the insulation on the wires.

Great info guys and thanks...
I have used Rust Bullet in the past which is like POR but less prep required and more of a product that chemically converts & stops rust than covers it.
The great thing about Phoenix Arizona & the desert southwest is that once the rust is dealt with it should never return.

I have used FatMat which is like Dynamat and had good luck. However I really liked how my previous Sportsmobile 4x4 Van had a insulation layer then a plywood floor and a vinyl covering over that. I could mop it out or sweep it easily vs carpet.
I also plan to built in storage areas in the sides so watch for info on that.

More pics coming later today of the seat install!

seats

Hello 1leglance,
Could you please tell me the name of the seat manufacturer? Thanks.

61Mk+

Chrysler Town & Country Mini van back seats :)
It is very common to find mini-van rear seats that get taken out for one reason or another.
The floor pan of a Troopie is high which means a thin seat.
I will post up pics of the seats & frames that were made...I am pretty happy overall.
The seats are a little thin & firm so we will see over time if I am happy....but they were way cheap.

I have been following your build 61Mk and I think you might be happier with Corbeu or Mastercraft or other racing/suspension seat. But I need seating for 4 and only have so much money to play with :)
