Good to hear it worked out. Solving problems is half the fun in my opinion. That is of course unless your in the middle of nowhere. :hhmm:

yea!

Truer words are rarely spoken.....
Sometimes problem solving in BFE is fun. Just very rarely.

AND sometimes problem solving gets old and one just wants to drive his rig for a change. THIS is where I am right now...;)

Thanks for all the support!

I put ~150 miles on it today and all is well. For those that have this engine, can you post a pic of the wire you tapped for the aftermarket tachometer? I think I know which one it is, but I'd like to see what you did.

Thanks!

It's the stock Chevy coil but it has the weatherpak that goes into the Howell harness. One wire has 12(+) when the key is on. I think I can run the tach to the non-12(+) wire, but I don't want to try it and fry the tach. I know there are a couple of people here with aftermarket tachs on 5.7 Vortec engines. Thanks!

With a single coil ign system the 12V- terminal is almost always where the tach wire is connected. MSD's & Positive Earth vehicles are the notable exceptions though there are probably others not immediately coming to mind. Coil packs and individual coils are where things get difficult.

FWIW most tachs are basically volt meters. They measure the digital on-off-on-off voltage of the negative side of the coil and are damped so that they display a constant reading of the "average voltage" at a constant rpm. Obviously the better ones are more sophisticated than that, but that's their most basic method of function. Accidentally connecting the pick-up wire to 12VDC + would spin the needle to max reading, but it shouldn't hurt the tach.

Perfect. Thank you!

Tach and anti-theft device

Revised fuel system using Aeromotive 100 micron pre-filter/shut-off valve, Airtex pump, and Aeromotive 10 micron filter all connected with -8 AN/push-lock fittings and 3/8" high-pressure fuel injection hose.

I am in the east bay and starting my Swap this week to a 5.3 vortec. Great write up on your swap and i will be starting my build thread soon.

Where'd you get that anti-theft device? And how difficult was it to install?

Seen them on Summit before. summitracing.com

I got mine at 4 wheel Parts. Rockcrawler (Terry), on here, got me a really good deal on it. I'm not convinced that it's for me quite yet. I have that fuel cutoff on the frame rail so I may take it back out. Not sure yet...

Jon.
A couple of p/n's for you. The Aeromotive filter assemblies that I've had apart did not have p/n's on their filter elements. It stood to reason that they weren't making the actual elements, but I'd never come across a similar filter element with a p/n on it. Until now. I was asked to build a bracket to hang an SX fuel pump & filter under a customer's car by a friend of mine. Since the pump & filter were used I wanted to make sure that they looked OK before going to the effort. Pulled the filter open and it uses the same filter element as do the Aeromotive's. At least it looks identical though I did not measure the OD of the boss that the element fits onto. Anyway, this filter element had a Purolator p/n on it, 1746873, and was marked as being 10 micron.

The other p/n is for the aluminum cylinder head that I plan to use in the future, I finally found it again. GM p/n 12556463; 165cc intake ports,58cc combustion chambers, angled plugs, 1.94/1.50 valves, used on the ZZ4 engines. That combo of metal, port and valve size should make for a good low speed engine with efficiency and grunt.

Thom, a little late, but thanks for the info. My fuel system is working well, and I've put a couple thousand miles on the rig with no issues. It's almost ready for my cross-country drive...

Brown Santa came the other day, and I finally took a break from house work to get some rig time in. Thanks Kevin! Fit and finish is perfect, as always, and the key from my tailgate works these cylinders just fine!

After getting the side panels mounted, I turned my attention to repositioning my HAM rig. I fashioned a mounting tab for the head unit and got it mounted above the rearview mirror.

Finally, Don (FC Fab) made me some beefy brackets for the 62 sway bar I want to mount. They are perfect, but my tailpipe is in the way so I'll be hacking that off soon.

I'll be getting my HAM and CB operational, sway bar mounted, and a few more things before the drive, but I'm happy with where I am for now.

Updates?

Jon, This build of yours gets interesting every time i look in here.i was browsing over the seat frame that Don built for you and stumbled upon the sway bar brackets that i also need for my sway bar mounts,i was ready to buy new ones but saw the one that Don built. I guess i have to pay Don a visit if he could make me another bracket.:D

PM me if your visiting near Georg or if you get lost in the Bay area.
