I'm currently out of country and am looking at bringing a BJ(70,73,74 or?) home, but I'm wondering if it wouldn't be easier to get one in the US. I've read a few posts and it seems BJs in the US are about what they are here in Europe. I'm planning on a Diesel. What's the best diesel 70 series BJ and how hard is it to maintain one in the US?

BJ7* series Land Cruisers were never offered for sale in the US, as a result they are quite rare there. The newer the Land Cruiser the better, if you are allowed to import and HZJ with personal effects, then that would be a better option.

If you are going to go for a BJ7* series, then get a BJ74.

If you have the opportunity to bring one in with you that would certainly be your best bet. While I can not promise you that a few have not been snuck into the country through various means, the 70 Series will be few and far between in the States. A few BJ70's (1985) or starting to show up however I seriously doubt that any BJ74's are here yet.
Just my opinion............1978HJ45

If you dont know anything about diesels then I would wait until you can get a HZJ 73. There is a pecking order here . You have to start with a NON TURBO for 100,000 miles . Then you can work your way into a Turbocharged model. Why do you want one?

I know of at least 5 in the states. BJ 74s

Europe has alot more 70 series cruisers than the US. Never where sold here by Toyota. There are some here that come up for sale every once in a while. They got to be at least 25yrs old to pass EPA importation requirements. Or you can also import from Canada BJ-70's that where sold in Canada by Toyota, 1985-87 I think. Check out the import threads up on top of the 70 series section.

It's just going to be a weekend/camping vehicle. Not a DD. I just found a cabrio 1990 HZJ73 1HZ. I wish I knew of a way to get it back.

I have one here in Richmond, va. Bought it from a guy in MA who imported from a guy in Canada.

Are photos posted on the Forum somewhere? ...1978HJ45

As a happy new owner of a 1997 HZJ73 who could be returning to the USA in the next 5 years, I'm interested in the concept of bringing a car in with my personal effects - I'd never heard of this option before.

Could you please elaborate?
