Those wings look more like canards to me, but I did make it back in one piece with my Short Bus bumper ready to be installed tomorrow.
Quick trip recap; snorkles, snorkles, everywhere! (What is it about those things???)
Route map shown took me the shortest route, about 130mi, all paved, and scenic for this drive. No road restrictions due to recent fires, and no 'smokies' along the way except for the 45mph section outside of Camp Verde (as expected). I had forgotten what a great sports car road this is to cut over to Happy Jack, and it was a fun drive.
Once there, I was driving into the parking lot and ran into Rudster, shook hands, and went ahead to park. Just walking around, I also saw Lauren/Matt, RedMuttonChops and 'Spotter', and we managed to meet up at several points throughout the day, sometimes unintentionally. Lots of rigs there that were some semblance of this;
The schedule seemed a little random throughout the day, but we did manage to happen across a Land Rover team who were adept at rolling one off of it's wheels,... repeatedly. This rollover recovery demo was actually pretty cool, and the way they demonstrated 3-4 different ways to right the sinking ship were impressive, including use of the onboard winch, a sand anchor, and a stationary object to get the thing back on it's wheels again. The overriding theme was; "Don't Panic" and the demo team got that point across nicely by showing what an easy task it can be to roll it back on it's wheels on flat ground, with the right tools and experience. I shot some video of this but haven't edited any of it yet.
I grabbed a Chili Dog from concessions, bought a JetBoil Coffee Press for $10, and picked up my Slee bumper from Cristo on the way out at about 2:30 or so. Temps were in the mid-60's, and lots of people were driving both the adventure moto course and the overland adventure setup. All said, a great day, and I'm looking forward to the bumper install tomorrow after I've had a chance to rest.
Was nice to see the high visibility TEQ CSC shirts in attendance, and it made meetings a lot more convenient. One member joked with me that we had to 'represent', in case anybody threw-down! we were certainly there in force.
I hope the other guys took more (and better) pictures than I. Amazingly, I also managed to average 28mpg up there and back going 75-80 most of the divided highway!!*
