So here is my dilemma. I found exactly what I was looking for, but its so rare I nearly hate to convert it!

2002 Supercharged 3.4 Access Cab 4x4 with a 5 spd. Manual WIndows.

I wanted a 1.2 Ton Toyota as around the ranch I pull dump trailers, etc.

The gas motor is ok, but a SC v6 requires premium fuel and I have the ability to store diesel at the ranch. I like being able to fill up without being glued to a gas station.

I overland and will be building this to handle those chores. Ive been gathering parts and planning on its transformation after the new year. I overland to places like Belize and planning a trip to Newfoundland. Finding premium fuel can be a challenge heading south.

Option#1: Mechanical diesel like an OM617. 125HP/181TQ
Option#2: Just carry an octane booster and keep the stock drivetrain. No doubt it's proven to be a reliable setup. 260HP/265TQ

I know it seems like the gas motor, but it also makes a huge difference where and when you get those power numbers! Thats why a 200hp 12v cummins can outpull most trucks on the road. Not always about how much power but how you deliver it. I also would love to have a fully mechanical truck. Some will say a 4bt, but too noisy and shaky for what I want. I want to spend a long time in this truck. Ive built many capable trucks over the years and Id like to build one last one to handle all my world travels. Thoughts, insight?

What did you decide? The truck is not that rare, the SC is somewhat rare and can help generate funds for the swap. Hope you went for it.

Why buy it in the first place if you’re wanting a different motor?

I would sell it and buy what you want. It would take a decade+ to recuperate the total cost (time money energy) of a swap based on difference in fuel cost. And to go with less power? Whyyy? Just rremove the S/C. That’s an underpowered motor for that truck, S/C or not.

Sounds like a lot of unnecessary work and trouble, start fresh with a different diesel vehicle from the rip.

What did you end up doing Ron? I’d be the contrarian here and say go for it. Sounds like you enjoy a challenge and OM617s are good engines. I’d throw a spinner on it to get some real power out of it though. The SC3.4 would sell for decent money and could be useful to someone else.

If the past couple of years have not taught us to do whatever the hell makes you happy, I don’t know what will.
