Overheating Engine, No Heat, Good Thermostat

X2 on taking the hood off now to get a great look down the back of the Engine.

Did you try running the truck without the thermostat in place? With unrestricted flow, it should take a good while longer for the car to overheat even if you have a hot spot in the back of the block. You would at least have one more observation to diagnose any blockage problems.

What Dan said. Stop Leak is pure poison, I ruined my FJ62 radiator and head with it. $1000 and some pain it was fixed.

And the verdict is most definitely in:

The weird thing is that after I pulled the valve cover, there was no buildup of the typical oil/coolant gunk. Must have caught it right as it happened.

I also finally was able to get a good look at the rear of the head. After removing the the rear heat shield off of the exhaust manifold, it was pretty easy to use a mirror to get a good view -- coolant coming out between the head and the block.

I have nearly the exact same symptoms on my 1995 fzj-80. I don't know what started the chain of events because my wife was driving it at the time, but it overheated, she tried to make it to a friend's house but it died two houses from her destination. By the time I got there it had cooled some. No antifreeze visible in the radiator. Filled with 1.5 gallons, started it but it quickly climbed toward the red. Turned on both heaters full blast but they blew ice cold. NO heat at all. No external antifreeze leaks. No steam in the exhaust. No milky stuff under the oil cap or on the dipstick.

After reading your thread, I think I have a culprit... I was wondering if you had it all back together and if you found any other problems besides the HG?

I also was wondering if I pulled the spark plug and the injector off the #6 cylinder and ran it like that; would that diagnose my problem? No pressure in #6 = no bubble in the coolant = normal operating temps.

nuclearbeef, What you explained is exactly what is happening to me. Did you find out what the problem was for you.

I'm hoping it's a bad thermostat.
