My 84 has been running hot lately. I checked the belt for the water pump/smog pump and it was loose. I tightened it and now it squeals like a pig every time I hit about 2200 rpms. There was grease on the pulleys and I cleaned them but it still squeals if it is tightened to spec's of 1/4 inch flex. The belt does look a little worn on the edges, but no cracks. Belt dressing will work for a little bit but not long.

If I get a new one should it fix the problem? Anyone else smarter than me got an opinion? Does anyone have the part number for the belt? I guess it is called the water pump belt?

TIA

try a new belt, if it's "squealed" long enough it probably wore the sides of the belt down. check new belt against old belt and you should see a differance

Belt

New belt will prob fix this , clean the pulleys with brake cleaner or laquor thinner on a rag? What year toyota and what engine?

Skilter, you may have a smog pump that's giving up the ghost. When you have the belt off, turn the water pump and smog pump by hand to see if either one is starting to seize.

Yes a belt change may make it go away, but if the air pumps gonna quit, your noise may return sooner than later after the belt replacement.

I'm an OEM parts dude but did try some Goodyear belts recently out of necessity to eliminate the squeeks and am quite pleased. I ditto the clean the pulleys with brake cleaner.

You might have a belt that is TOO tight now. Spray some water on the belt while it is in motion and see if the probem goes away and then comes back.

I would also change the belts too. I had a water pump that did not leak but stared to squeal before it went bad. New pump, no squeek.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't think it is smog as it has been OEM replaced a couple years ago. The pulleys had a lot of grease on them and I sprayed some stuff on them to clean them while the belt was still on there and it did a pretty good job but it is still squealing. This squeal is LOUD and nothing squealed before I tightened the belt.

I am going to get a new belt and see what happens. I will let you all know. Thanks for the tips.

Once the slipping begins, the belts and pullies get glazed and it's all downhill from there. I had the same issue when I still had the 2F. I got a new belt and I used an abrasive disk on an electric drill to rough up the pullies. Problem solved.

Yep. I think that is what I am in for. After cleaning them of the crud, the pulleys are pretty slick.

I called the Toyota parts department in Richardson TX. I told them I was looking for belts for an 1984 FJ60 and I knew I was in trouble when the guy said "Huh, wow... that caught me off guard. Give me that VIN#." They told me there were only 2 belts on my truck (obviously there are three...) and they are the DRIVE BELT - Toyota part number 99332-11250-78 and the ALTERNATOR BELT - Toy. part # 99343-11570-77. I said there has to be another one and they said nope... that's it.

FWIW and board info, I finally cleaned up enough stuff and moved the belt along to see the part number on the belt. Thank goodness it was a toyota part. The part number for the smog pump / water pump belt is: 99343-11120. Curiously, it has no extra dash and two numbers like the others.

I loosened the belt just a touch and "burped" it (although it didn't seem to have any trapped air). It still runs a little bit hot but not much and it still squeals just a bit, but it will get me by until I can have them all replaced.

Thanks for the tips...

The fact that the toyota parts people were confused does not surprise me. Took my pig in to the Toyota shop in Knoxville many years ago and they honestly tried to tell me that it's not a toyota product, and that they did not carry parts for it. Wow with Toyota in 3 inch letters all over the grill. Who would a thought.
