so i just bought a 92 p/u w/ the 22re (196k) and decide to drain the coolant since it looked kinna dirty and replaced the t-stat w/ a toyota one while i was at it, anyways all seems good except when i 1st start it after it's sat for a while and drive with the heater on then the gauge starts climbing, it doesn't over heat when it's at idle, only when im driving while the heater (heater is warm as normal) is on after the truck has sat for a while, so i figure i have an air pocket somewhere in the system, so far i have tried burping the damn thing several times already each time a different set up, 1st time i d/c one of the heater hoses that goes towards the h/c valve till coolant ran out, plugged it back up and toped off the radiator, 2nd time i tried letting it idle w/ the cap off for about 15mins, then the last time i parked the front a curb w/ the cap off engine running w/ a mix of idel and 1500 or so rpm revs to try and burp it, and so far nothing, same ol problem. So im hoping one of you guys might have had the same problem can help a fellow out here, thanks

Some questions:
Before the coolant and t-stat replacement, were you having issues maintaining a steady temp?
Does it reach this temp just driving level, or pulling a hill?

If it's a hill, and the temps were abnormal previously, I think it may be time for a new radiator.
If it's just getting warm on it's own, I would think your t-stat isn't opening.

2000 or 3000 RPM is the number the FSM says should push any bubbles out of the engine. Regular driving should have done it. If you use a rolled up newspaper, can you stop the fan blades? If so, then it needs the fan clutch silicon oil changed, or just replace the fan clutch. There is a link to a thread on changing the fan clutch silicon oil in the FAQ thread. FAQ thread is at the top of this forum. There are also links to online copies of some of the FSM manuals for your truck.

nope, infact that gauge seemed to read lower then i expected (1/8) way up before i replaced the t/stat

either, usually after its sat for a while and i guess i was wrong about being only with heater on, now it doesn't matter if the heater is on of off, the gauge still climbs while driving.

it has an aftermarket (not sure of brand) radiator in it when i bought it and seems to be fine since i did a cooling system pressure test on it and it help pressure just fine.

maybe, although im positive i installed it the right way (jingle valve up and facing towards the radiator)

tomarrow im going to drain the coolant out again and and take out the t-stat housing and double check to make sure its in the right direction and see where it goes from there.:meh:

Drill an 1/8" hole in the flange where water can pass through.

well i decided to drain the coolant out and open up the t-state housing just to double check to make sure i had it installed the right way which i did and put new toyota red in it, fired it up and let it idle w/ cap off for about 15mins, manage to burp a few times and heater blowing nice and warm, drive around for a while and no over heating, parked till the next morning and same sh*t happen again, over heat when started driving, so now i just order the dual stage t-stat from toyota which will be here on tuesday, so we'll see how it turns out..:meh:

You didn't make the mistake of blending incompatible coolants did you? Mix the wrong two and you basically get jello trapped in the jackets.

i didn't think about that.. but i did flush out the coolant twice already, do you think i need to do a power flush (machine) when i swap out the t-stat in a few days?

The dreaded rust-coloured milkshake.

FWIW the two Toyota-only shops I see the most, Yodaman and Mudrak's, both use just regular green anitfreeze.
I've run Napa brand AF in The Mule since she came home, and have had no issues, even considering she's running a small, revvy engine and black-coloured.

Hey, another thought: what shape's your water pump in? recent changes can dislodge barnacles inside there, and create blockages.

just installed the new t-stat in and so far so good , drove around several times today after the truck sat for a while and the gauge doesn't move anymore past about 1/4 way up, heater blows nice and warm, so im happy. next up in the following month will be a tune up/ base line the fluids and new 31" bfg a/t's by winter.

Glad to hear it!

I hate it and love it when a major problem turns out to be a simple fix!

I'm glad the problem was solved. I hate to see people throw part after part on a problem. I will boiler the T-stat
before I will buy another T-stat. Now--if I could only figure out mu overheating problem!

what is your overheating problem, pray tell?

I put one of these(its missing the screw on cap in the photo) on the higest point of my heater hose at the firewall. It allows me to fill a dry system to help with burping. But christ find a better one than I get to begin with, The plastic ones can be a bear to seal intially.
