Iam about to order tires for my 91 fj80 with OME851/863 (stock wheels) and I need to know for sure that 33 12.50 15 BFG M/T or MTR's will not rub under full articulation or any other time (turning,bumps..etc). if they will rub I will get 32/11.50/15..and I thought my 3FE power house was nutless before, with 33's Iam gonna have to get out push it up the hills.

thanks

Strap,
a 33 x 12.50 will be intersting to impossible to balance on the stock wheels. a 32x11.50 will go one but will still be interesting to balance. My solution was to get some cheapie 15 x 8 black steelies and mounted my 33 x 12.50 bfg atkos on them. aworks great and I have some spare wheels in the garage. FWIW you should not be looking more than $50 per rim at max. with that ome set up you should not see any rub at all.
as to the 3FE being nutless its really not that bad. mine will hold 75-80 on the flats and holds 70 on most hills. I am currently sowingthe seeds of a regear needed to my wife. she wants a tent trailer and I advised I would need to regear first to make it easier to haul. We will see if it works.

they will balance fine....... its all in who is doing the balancing.. my 37 inch swampers balanced out and they are grooved and chunking.... listen.. your fine. buy the 33s ...

sick boy,
the 91 and 92 trucks have the older style sr5 rims that are 15 x 7 this makes mounting them a little more interesting.

The stock wheels on an 80 with 33x12.50 will not be able to be balanced? So I'll have that vibration and noise from them. My stock BFG Long Trail T/A's need to be balanced, but that was b/c I had brake work done so the tires were all taken off and put back w/o balancing...gets kinda annoying.

Sorry for whoring your thread but, what will happen to the tire w/o balancing?

Its all in whose balanceing them. my brother has 91 with stock rims and 33's i bought him. they balance fine..... have never really heard of 33's being inpossible to balabnce unless bogger...

nyk,
balancing them is possible but difficult. the bigger issue is running a 7 inch wide rim with a 12.5 tire is a little on the sketchy side when you air down.
I mounted some 32x11.50 bfg ats and it worked ok but it still was a bear to balance the tires out (I balanced my self on a hunter dsp 5000) the static aspect will not be that hard to get but the dynamic will be really hard with that much weight outside the rim.

I've been told (on here and other places) that running a wide tire on a narrow rim is BEST for airing down since it acts as a 'poor man's bead lock' and keeps the tire on the rim better at lower pressures.

Correct! My spare is a 35x12.50 on a 15x7. I don't think you could air down enough to break that tire off that rim.

My neighbor runs 36x12.50s on 15x6 FJ60 wheels. He mud bogs it. Not sure what pressure he runs for that but not only is a PITA getting the tires on, they are near impossible to get off. Also the taller the tire the less the rim causes tread deflection, because the height of the sidewall absorbs some of the tendancy to crown.

I have an early 91 (2/90 production) FJ80 on 33x12.50 BFGs with stock wheels sitting in my driveway right now. The tires look like they are wearing well. And in the brief time I drove it I didn't feel any balance issues. (NW Sickboy's brothers)

I wouldn't say the balance would be the tough part. Mounting is a PITA and then getting them to wear correctly is the other problem. They will want to wear in the centers so you need to play with air pressure to get the tread to lay flat rather than be domed.

Well i stand corrected.
I mounted the 32 x11.50s on the 15 x 7 rims and had a hell of a time getting them to balance out.
for those of you running the narrower rims does it casue toom uch sidewall deflection??

So should I just be safe and go with a 33/10.50 ? that tire will work fine right.. It just looks a little to skinny for the fj80 but if thats a better way to go thats what I will do.

thanks

Just buy the 33/12.5 - the 10.5 will be too narrow for real wheeling anyway.

I think Phaedrus must been using too much PB Blaster lately. Wider tire on narrow rim around here is what's called a redneck beadlock. Tougher to unseat and has no impact on balancing them.
