My 22R is done, need to replace. I am looking for options and opinions. I am pretty sure the block is no good.

LC Engineering, jasper also has rebuilt long and shortblocks, you can call napa, orileys, autozone,or your local parts store and they should have a supplier that they can get either a long or short block.

If you go through Oriellys (like i did) then it will have a weird oil seal in oil pump. I recommend pulling the pump and replacing it with an Toyota seal before anything else. The seal they put in has 'backing' packed in there, and in my case, it comes unraveled and makes a horrid sound in the oil pump... Then you have to take it all apart and make sure its no where else... That happened within 1000 miles of my install, and PowerTorque (the rebuilders) swore it was installation fault... They wanted me to buy oil dye, run the engine for 1-2 hours with the oil dye, pull the seal, pay 8.00 worth of expidiate shipping, and they would send me another one within 2weeks... I paid 5bucks for my toyota one and it hasnt leaked since.

It's all about how much you want to spend and how "painless" you want it to be. Typically, I'm limited to a specific $$$$ amount... which usually ain't much!

I'm sure there are more sources, these are just a few....

22re are cheap and easy to come by. buy a parts truck for 500 and swap the engine, you need a hoist, anther $100 and a weekend worth of time, also buy enough beer for the muscle you have to hire to do the swap. the second you get a shop involved you will pay up the ass for it.

i can also say there is a mercedes 5cyl turbo diesel(om617) to stock 4runner tranny adapter plate going around. a om617 used is ~$1000 (whole parts vehicle) and the swap requires minor modications(electric fan and new rad)....more money
