My 22r rebuild

hey all, so a few weeks ago im on way way to work, when outta no where I hear a terrible noise ( id prefer not to even try to describe it) and suddenly lose power, so I limp it to the side of the road where I pop the hood and notice 2 huge holes in my block, so obviously it was time for a rebuild. At first I had a teeny tiny broke high schooler budget, and wanted to get it done cheaply, but after getting my first report card, my mom decided I needed to do it the right way :) so the shopping begins, I had been looking at complete engines for a while with out any results, then I finally came across a newly machined block, score. So I now have a newly machined block, bored .60 over with new pistons and rods. Next comes the head, I took it to the shop and ended up with a brand new looking head. I topped it all off with a new clutch kit, new oil and water pumps, timing kit with steel guides and a new timing cover. So at this point the motor is just about done and will be ready to throw in on Sunday. On to the pics :)

That's quite the hole there! Did it give any warning of that? Metal in your oil before? Ticking noises from the bottom end? I'm assuming that the #1 connecting rod also let loose--correct?

Looks good.

nope, none at all, no noise, no loss of power or anything, one of the bolts that holds the connecting rods broke

Good luck on the swap today. Just be careful and take your time with those old plastic connectors, broken connectors don't stay on very well.

Wow!

The pickup I just bought was missing the #2 con rod bearing. Well, it wasn't missing. It was distributed throughout the engine as a silvery paste, and as a lump of goo in the bottom of the pan. Just a clunking noise though, it still ran! But no mondo hole through the block.

thanks for all the replies guys. We got the motor in Sunday night at around 11, turned the starter and got the (chitty starter) click. So Monday morning after having checker auto parts say that the started was still good, we cleaned the contacts and put it back in and she fired right up :)

I said it once. I'll say it again. I don't think it's possible to kill a 22RE. DANG you put a hole in the block and it still ran. I think the only reason you lost power is because of the rather large vacuum leak.

Well we got the motor in at around 11 on sunday night, went to fire her up and the starter just clicked So we decided to call it a night. On monday morning romix took the starter into checker it they said it was fine, so cleaned the contacts and got that thrown back on and she fired up. The motor is running great It was great seeing the motor apart and putting it back together, now it will be MUCH easier to diagnose and fix future problems

I don't know about that, rare, but it does happen - I completely killed the 22re in my old '88 p/u. It developed a severe lack of power at highway speed, if I floored it I could barely maintain momentum, if I backed out I couldn't build up any steam again. I realized what was happening and pulled over, when I checked the engine oil (still full) there was smoke coming off the dipstick because the oil was so hot from bearing failure (coolant temps were fine). After that it never really started again or turned over very well - still no hole in the block, though I was impressed that it ran as long as it did (I think that happened 15 minutes after I fought a speeding ticket and lost )
