Careful driving in CA with NATO. CHP has been cracking down supposedly.

ive heard that, but there was a thread going around talking about how they arent actually " illegal" if being used for non commercial use. i know @jcardona1 was talking about it at one point on here. maybe he can chime in.

Jose would know, he's the fuzz. BUT, I worked with some Jeep guys that did in fact get ticketed for their Nato cans. Color and manufacture date was discussed if I remember correctly...which is likely I don't :P

hmm. good to know. Hopefully he still has that paper with the technicalities on it.

Why's everybody think I'm a cop lately? HA! Anywho, there's nothing in the regulation that says you can't own them and transport fuel in them. Any cop that cites you for that is WRONG and misinterpreting the law. They're not lawyers and most aren't smart enough to know their badge from their butthole. Here's my old post. The kicker of course is the date. Do jerry cans have a date stamp in them? I've never checked...

Interesting little tidbit. I'm gonna print these out and keep them in the truck. Tell the poHlice :flipoff2:

The proposed regulations would apply to new gas cans and spouts sold in California starting January 1, 2001. There is no requirement for owners of gas cans or spouts sold before that date to modify their gas cans or to scrap them and buy new ones.

I didn't think you were law enforcement. I was wondering that also lol. .

That's the one.
Thanks for posting it

I've been using the NATO cans for years and they rock. They don't leak in any orientation. And another nice thing is that you can carry fuel inside the vehicle with no spills or smell.

I recently made a 1000 mile road trip and put my Nato Cans in my Drawer as they fit great.
About 20 miles from home the wife says I smell gas (She has a nose like a bear)
I pull over and check the cans and nothing. Keep driving and still smell gas. Pull over and look underneath and nothing, check the fuel rail, etc.
Get home and unload and find my chainsaw had tipped over and leaked about a tablespoon of gas.
It has me reconsidering hauling my cans inside even thou they would likely never leak.

Emptying cans with Super Siphon is the only way to keep the smell off hands. They are slick (super simple too) and I wish I knew of them earlier.

I just got 2 NATO cans through the Land Rover dudes with the flexible spout sized for unleaded gas. No leakage at all including when emptying into tank. These carried a "Made in United Kingdom" paper tag. I got the red color. Pricey but they fit the bill.

I bought mine on Craigslist for $10 apiece then paid $20 to have sandblasted and powder coated. One stil had a pin leak at seam so I sealed with Por15. Good stuff and ~$15 if you ever need to seal a tank, worked great. More hassle then I wanted, but they should last a lifetime if you keep fuel in cans so they don't rust out.

Used the Nato cans from Deutsche Optik. 9500 miles to Ak and back. Not a leak.

4 jerry cans of diesel and 2 of water for 3000 miles off-road on the Sahara. Car handled no problem, just make sure your roof rack is strong enough....
