Had my 60 sitting on street for a better part of a month after purchasing a daily driver (once gas hit $4). Went to move it, and after a jump and few minutes of idle, it started with this God-awful racket, loud metallic knock (not a tap). Was running strong before it sat. Took it to Toyota in Davis and they found nothing wrong up top: 2-6 had compression of 160+ and #1 was around 135; looked as best they could and everything was in solid/tight con'd. Dude thinks it may be a pin down low but that's his best guess. It will cost serious coin to tear it down just to see what's wrong. So what are my options? I have no garage or serious toolage to break this thing down. Toyota says they can hold on to it for approx a couple weeks, so if anyone has ideas or know of folks who do diesel conv, please let me know! I'd hate to sell her for parts but I can't keep towing her around town collecting parking tix. She has approx 250K mi 1987 Federal Poo Brown color. Passed smog last year. Cruiser Dan, you out there???

It is best to keep it in one thread.

A pin down low? So the mechanics said it is something internal? Where are you located? Davis,CA? You don't have to tear it down to get a good idea where the problem is located. Could be the bolt came loose in the bottom of the carb like what happened to my engine. I would pull the plugs and inspect all cylinder and especially number 1. Drain the oil and look for metal.

Call Mudrak in Sonoma (707-996-5272). Bet he will have a good idea of what it is without tearing it down. He rebuilt my 2F or can do whatever you want if you want to upgrade to a V8 or diesel.

Do you have access to a mechanic's stethoscope, or did the Toy mechanics use one?

I doubt seriously that a piston/rod/crank/flywheel component loosened itself in a month of non-use. Our stock '83 sits for months & fires right up (128K mi on the engine).

soooo leme get this right....

they think it has a "pin" loose on the bottom end but didnt pull the oil pan off to verify? WFT?! It takes all of MAYBE 20 minutes to drain the oil and drop the pan. with the pan off you can feel for play in the rod bearings, check for any metal layin in the bottom of the pan, pull a couple of bearing caps off and inspect bearing condition. if they were not this thourough but have enought balls to say they think a "pin" is loose then i have to say that the "mechanic" that came to this conclusion has a "pin" loose in his head.

it aint rocket science, i am a mechanic for a living myself, when something like that comes in and is doing that and everything up top checks out it means time to pull the pan anc check it out.

lazy people...

ok sorry rant over.

Not alot of info to go by, but have you considered a piece of carbon deposit came loose from a piston top and is rattling inside a cylinder?? It sounds like death, like a spun bearing or rod knock. It can be easy to "pass" by carefully ingesting water while running the motor at higher revs.

The noise or knock can be diagnosed by shorting the spark of each cylinder individually. This will give you more accuracy if you decide to pull the motor down.

it was fair game...:flipoff2:

but yes good techs are hard to come by i was a service manager for a while and had hell trying to get
1.) anyone that knew anything,
2.) anyone that i thought would be half way reliable and
3.) someone that could pass a piss test.
