I picked up and installed a red top optima the other day. Problem is the optima is like 1" shorter than the battery tray is made for. I ended up cutting a piece of plywood and putting that under the battery so the clamp would hold it.

Any better solutions?

I fabricate my own hold downs when I install them..

Optima makes a plastic spacer. Go back to where you bought it and tell them they "forgot" to give you the spacer. I think it's usually extra $, but sometimes not, kind of randomly.

go to an auto parts store and ask them for the trays that batteries(like excides) are shiped on, they clip right to the bottom of an Optima or Orbital and will space it up the correct amount, best part is....they are free. There are different sizes as well(width and length)

You could also get a hold of some threaded rod and make your own J-hooks that would grab the underside of the tray, then slap a piece of 1" aluminum square tube across the battery and trough the J-hooks. Add a couple of wing nuts and lock washers and you are good to go with a clean look.

Just my .02
