Coil,ignitor,ballast resistor,distributor,points......SUCK!!

Well just as im starting to get things together ive been plagued by 35year old electrical demons.....

Ever since I tried hooking up the tach that Ed gave me im getting no-intermittent spark...right now it wont start at all

Toms gonna lend me his spare coil, ballast, ignitor assembly to try and introduce me to the world of points:cheers:

Alright so today i got it to run by running a jumper wire from the (-) side of coil to the red wire running to the condenser on the distributor....but it wont run without it...

Any ideas on which one of these antiques is causing the problem?

Rollcage Rollout!!!!!

I went to Robs friend Jims shop for some assistance and was not disappointed,he used my basic idea with a few tweeks and we had a cage in it in only 6 hours!!!!

If anyone needs ANY cage work or hardcore fabrication I recommend you give him a call......

Check out his Toyota parked in a tree in his yard!!...the fabrication on this thing is top shelf

Any ideas as to why the idle seems to jump from nil to 2500?

I'm not to great with these myself, but I'll throw out some guesses...

Maybe choke activating? (bad spring)
Maybe starving for fuel intermittently? (line or filter clog or bad fuel solenoid or wiring to it)
Maybe vacuum leak? (hoses or carb base or manifold) propane or carb cleaner to locate leak

Some pictures i got from the previous owner......oh how far shes come!!!

Just givin my thread a bump so i dont forget about it!

After 2 good runs it has done good....

Heres my problems still.....

1.master cylinder has s*** the bed....rear res keeps losing fluid and gaining air....while the front overflows from below

2.Carb is tempermental at best.....have to keep manual choke partially closed to maintain an idle.....then open it when i need full power or it chokes out.....havent figured this out and dont really have the $$$ to chase it down.....yet

3.have to make a bikini top........damn the sun gets hot

4.every ******* link on the steering has slop in it.....the steering is more like asking permission to go left or right than actual directional control

1: Think about what pedal feel you prefer and buy 7/8" or 1" M/C accordingly. I prefer a firm pedal, so I bought a new (reman) master cylinder (NAPA TSM111722 Price:$42.99 Core:$2.00) 75 FJ40 1" bore, 10mm x 1.0 fittings... it was the OEM (Aisin IIRC?). If money is a concern, I may have an old M/C laying around for free: lmk.

4: do you know about the penny trick in the relay link? also, dunno how much of the slop is in your box, but i have the original (manual) box from the '78 I was gonna post FS here on MUD; LMK if you want, i'll give ya a break.

The box is not the problem....its mostly in the relay rod/box behind the front bumper....

And i def am gonna get a new master by next week

Well i found the cause of some of my steering slop.....damn steering arm bolts were loose in the knuckle on the drivers side.......this ALWAYS happens to my Yotas and no one else ever reports this problem....is it just me?

Also my cheap self swapped the master from my FJ60 onto the 40...it stopped the leaking problem but the pedal gets semi-firm about 1/4 off the floor.....sucks......some one in 40 tech says the newer 60 master might not move as much volume......causing the low pedal.....i dunno......starting to miss the 4runner

Well i broke down and got a new master cylinder.......but even better i found out i can swap the outers from this fj60 onto my 40 front axle.....gain vented disc brakes and aisan hubs!!!

just had to bump this thread...

dont wanna let it slip off into some "delete list" somehow
