I need a benchmark operating temp for these engines. What temps would I expect to see, (all driving conditions) in a 2F with a perfectly operating cooling system? I've seen anywhere between 160-200... is this about right? What is too hot... boiling temp?

Hey Mike,typicaly the truck will run at different temps.Mine dos not have a temp gauge with numbers on it but the standard unit.I watch it and it fluctuates.Toyota says that it can run safely at any position in the white area on the standard needle gauge.That tells me that there is no particular one temp.I would like to know myself.My 85 4runner stays at the same place no matter what I'm doing so go figure.The thermostat should open at around 180 unless you have a hotter thermo.or colder.Anyways that's my take on it.Dave
 
My bare-bones 2F runs in the low 180s on the flat freeway, up into the 190s on long uphill pulls. I don't worry unless I hit 200, just because it almost never gets that hot and there must be something wrong if it does...
 
I stuck a thermometer in the radiator and drove around for a 1/2 or so, including a pretty steep hill climb up to my house. When I got home the gauge was reading 210. After a few minutes at idle it jumped up 10*. Ambient temp is 70* or so. Once I turned the engine off the gauge reading really jumped up, which I guess is normal? The upper radiator hose was super hot, I was unable to hold on to it for longer then a sec. I guess it's safe to say that I am running hot, but not overheating.
 
When you are not moving, there is less airflow over the radiator to cool it. Also, the radiatior does about nothing when the engine is stopped; heat rises, so you would expect to see the temp climb when shut off.
 
Thermostat does not open until 190 deg F (88 deg C). So a well performing system should run about 190 deg F +or- 10%, so 210 seems reasonable.

anyplace up to 205deg is OK, with your temps your just fine

There are 180° and 190° thermostats so it depends on which one is installed.:)
 
I have only seen the 88 deg C OEM thermostats. Are the 180 deg ons OEM?

I run 180deg in most all my Cruisers, its OEM and any dealer can get them. If I recall its actaully for a 77 or so FJ40, but works in all up to at least 87.....I kinda forget.

and i know someone is gonna say that it wont lower the op temp..........but it does, tested MANY times with a non contract RayTech
 
Mine has a 190 deg F thermometer and it sits at 190 summer, winter, day, night.
 
the oem tstat is 190. napa sells a 180. As long as my truck is moving it sits around 190. It will creep up on long highway hills and stoplights. I have my electric fan set to come on at 210 and it almost never does. I used to be worried about temp all the time because the stock gauge is such a POS. Autozone sells a sunpro mechnical gauge for ~$15 that takes all of 30min to install if you get yourself a 1" piece of brass extension pipe from home depot ahead of time. The sunpro gauge even comes with the thread adapter from whatever is in the head to NPT. I think that the extension needs to be 5/8" dia but I could be mistaken. Just bring the adapter in with you.

Best $15 I ever spent.
 
all within the first 2 miles on my 62 the temp goes FIRST up to 195 then the thermostat kicks opens, within another mile the temp goes up to 195 again and the fan kicks on, then the temp shoots down to 185 and creeps to 190 and stays there untill i turn the rig off nevertheless the temp never sees 210 when turned off:cheers:
