So this morning I was showing my wife how to use the 4wd modes in the driveway. My wife decided to not pay attention to what I was saying. She has the car in neutral and the transfer case in neutral and for some reason put the car into park with the transfer case still in neutral. Can this hurt the car? It seems fine but did make a strange sound for a second.

It will only hurt the truck if you walk away from it and assume that it's going to be there when you get back! With the TC in N there's nothing to keep the vehicle from rolling when the Trans is in Park; it's an open system at that point. Should also be an AT/P warning light on the dash IIRC.

^^ That! The parking pawl wont engage with the transfer case in neutral. Good thing your rig didn't walk away. :)

Actually, the strange sound heheard was the parking pawl engaging with spinning parts in the transmission. The transmission will be in park, just the transfer case will be in neutral ... that's the setup when I am towing my h**p behind the RV. The LC will have to ride on a trailer ...

Let your wife know she really screwed up in a bad way and see if you can parley it into some mods....

Thanks for the help guys.

I do however think that the truck sounds louder after this? Any thoughts? I don't know why it would sound louder but it does....

Because you're looking for a problem.
