Got to do a first for me, guiding a group of jeeps through Big Creek. It was a long day of walking and spotting, but did learn a lot about tire placement and obstacle clearing. Great perspective when you are not driving.

I assume you went with a weighted tag? That really increases the price VERY quickly.

Jesus that is a lot for registration! I pay $148 for my Dodge. Not being a Dually helps a lot and mine is also registered as a 3/4 ton. I bought mine in my home town in PA. The dealer brings in 3/4 ton trucks with one ton suspension under them. This is done for farmers and construction guys as the price to register and insure a truck goes up dramatically past 3/4 ton.

Yup, 20k weighted tag. Can anyone help understand why it's so high? Highway Use Tax is $238, and "license" is the most expensive item. I suppose it's because of the weighted tag, but I'd like to understand more.

Title and property tax were both in there this time, but still.

EDIT: Looks like the license fee for a 20k tag is in the highest cost bracket for private vehicles and is $404. That's the majority of it.

EDIT2: Highway Use Tax is collected instead of sales tax each time a title is transferred, so my annual will be a bit over $400 to renew each year.

yea...weighted tags get stupid quick. I recently asked about them (for my deuce and a half) and had to back away.

and that will be EVERY year. Until, of course, 'they' raise the prices.

Isnt there a way around this or rather a way to ease the pain? I thought lots of builders/contractors got permanent tags or truck tags or some designation that allowed maybe a 2-3 year span? Maybe not; just seems i recalled some advantage although it may not adress the weighted fees

Farm Tags are about 1/2 cost, that's the only thing I can see for vehicles.

With trailers, you can get a multi-year trailer tag, but not for the towing vehicle from what I understand. All SUVs are exempt from weighted tags.

Just another GLARING example of 'government' idiocy.

How does a 7K lb Excursion or Suburban towing a 10000 lb trailer weigh less and put less stress on the road than a 7k lb f350 towing the same load? How was there enough time in the day to come up with the idea, debate it, vote on it, and then make it into law. THEN, all the DMV databases had to be updated, and personnel trained. There is the reason for your over the top fees.

Yup. Sounds like you need to convert it back to suv like this guy to get around it ..... And maybe buy a farm lol

Plus side is you could run it as a food truck at CMCC next year to offset costs

We looked into a farm plate for our PU but it would create legal issues with regard to hauling customer vehicles. Make sure that your insurance covers the load on the truck and the trailer as well as the trailer.

Gale Banks is the man, I got to tour his shop/museum about 12 years ago. The best part was HE was the tour guide. My sisters boyfriend at the time was their UPS man, stopped there every day and had to load and unload a ton of stuff so he got to know him fairly well. One day he told him if he ever wanted to bring a friend by on a sunday when he wasn't working he would give them a tour.

Chatted with him for a bit and the tour was only about 30 minutes. On display was what was left of the 277MPH GTA trans am he built the first year that GM put injection on the trans ams. (he flipped it a few years later so it was a little bit banged up)

Saw a mock up of the engine he made for the US navy to be used by the seals. Had to be quiet, develop over 500 HP and run on 84 octane.

also had a mock up of the prototype FI volvo turbo engine. Was apparently the one that volvo eventually bid for to use in their turbo bricks in the 80's.

Also had all his diesel dragsters and the bonneville Dmax S10 there.



I heard he ran a souped up freightliner at Pikes Peak a few years back.

My team turned out pretty good except for accidentally drafting my defense in the 4th round and causing me to loose out on Olsen as my TE
