This is a spinoff of Wyomingben's original thread where he wanted to put locking hubs on the rear of his truck so he could drive in Front wheel drive only or trailer it.

The thread got sidetracked horribly by tntoyota and I primarily.

So, I cleaned up the thread and am gonna bring it here.

Please, if you have experience driving a vehicle with only 1 wheel drive (constant)

For instance. You have a locker and snapped an axle shaft.

So you limped back to camp with only one rear axle powered.

Please let us know the braking habits oand acceleration/deceleration "quirks" that happened while driving.

This is open to any truck. Mostly because the SF rear cruiser axles are not gonna like being driven very far with a busted axle ;)

I drove a bit of broken rear shafts before. The time that I did drive on a broken axle the long side exploded, nuttin left, gazillion pieces. Short side was badly twisted and cracked.... but still giving power to the PS wheel. It drove fine in one wheel drive with some added poping and clicking from the destroyed longside :D I have RDB's though so my wheels dint fall off and this did not effect the brakes.

I snapped the Tacoma Mini rear I used to have in my 40.

Drove about 20 miles with a spool and a busted axle.

Anytime you puched it or got off the throttle with gusto it wanted to pull one way or another.. Brakes were not affected at all.

I have done this many times. Driven on just the front, and on one rear at times also. I am always really careful when in FWD, and when I broke the rear I unlocked the broken side and drove in 4WD. I did this for the load. I figured that it was easier on the truck to let the front help so as not to damage the other rear side. Braking was normal, handling was normal for 4WD. Acceleration was a little strange in FWD.

the first time i snapped a rear long side (exploded) drove it to the side of the road (aussie locker in rear at time) AFTER the axle wheel and tire went walking on down in front of me. drove fine other than the lean to one side brakes were spongy as i had no left rear drum and the shoes just expanded out.

second time on the trail (aussie locker still in rear) had to finish a hill climb then drive to level ground felt like an open dif truck again brakes felt fine as did driving untill drum poped off of shoes a foot before i stoped but till then braking was normal.

another time i ruined some carrier bearings (literally nothing left) in the rear dif (after first axle exploded i didnt get all the metal out) side of the road no cell phone not even the aussie would lock up and get me moving it would only click. locked the front hubs tossed it in 4wd hi and drove it 5 miles at 30-40 mph felt weird driving with only the fronts they spun really easy again braking was as normal.

last one i swear.

replaced my third member after the first broken shaft and didnt realize the pinion flange was dif. so i had to drive the truck 40 miles round trip with rear drive shaft removed and running in 4wd hi at regular highway speeds to go and get the right flange. (meaning both rear axle shafts and the ring and pinion were all spinning oh and if it mattered had the aussie in as well) super easy to spin the front tires no problems at highway speeds with braking at all no handling.

It is amazing how easy it is to do a front wheel burnout :D

I pooched a rear shaft on lower 2 once. After it taking 3 winches to get me over jaws I was near the exit where I had to make it past another rig and around a turn. Normally I would have not been able to do it. But with no rear shaft I could do front digs and make the tightest turn the 60 ever has. Ever since then I wanted a t-case that would allow front digs.

I would have got one by now if the 60 series case wasnt stupid strong.

lol

A 205 is on the list for my next tcase if the 60 series junk does not survive in Bob..

BTW, if you add rear cutting brakes the turn gets even tighter :smokin:

what are you driving a tractor:rolleyes:

oh wait

Twisted a rear d-shaft tube and broke a birfield, limped home with only the front left tire pulling. Very bad handling characteristics, pulled and bucked when trottle was applied. Brakes were not affected.

gonna have to fire up the 40, unlock the rear hubs and go for a spin. i did it once, years ago and dont' remember what it was like.

come to think of it, when i chunked a yoke on the driveshaft on my old 79 gmc, i ran around for two weeks with just the front shaft. don't remember being impressed in that though.

I drove a 40 series ( rear FF ) ARB locked with only one wheel after broke all of the outside flange bolts on the FF .. ( the pass side ) so I drive back home with my rear ARB locked and only one wheel drive ..

All the way need to corect the track coz I feel the the drivers rear tire was " pushing me " outside of the road ..

O also broke a rear SF ( long side ) on my Tencha but was close to the garage, so thanks to my rear disc I can go back to the garage without problems and pull the shaft for swap ..
