I have decided on purchasing 2.5 OME for my 77 FJ40. While reading about all the different lifts and checking out vendors I have come across that there are different springs that I can use. From what I got is I only need heavier springs for a winch, front bumper, roof rack, trailer or if I load the back of 40 up with a lot of gear. Later on in the future I hope to add a new front bumper, a PTO winch, and an expedition trailer, so the question is do I go heavy, medium, or light duty springs? Any insight would be great.

I just want my OME :bang:

Hi All:

I'd suggest the OME Dakar "medium-load" front springs for the front of your '77 FJ40.

If you plan on running a hard-top all of the time or a soft-top with a heavy lead the medium-load rear springs are appropriate; if no top or a soft-top with light loads buy the medium-load springs and remove a leaf from the pack (IIRC its the third leaf from the top of the pack.)

Good luck!

<- don't have an FJ, but have bought OME stuff in the past.

Most of the time OME will give a weight rating for their springs or coils. Like if you are replacing a bumper, you subtract the old bumper weight from the new bumper weight. You will need to ball park what the final weight will be. Light duty will be for stock weight to X pounds, medium for X to Y pounds, ect. If you buy heavy springs now and don't add the extra weight until later, you might get a little more lift than desired and a much stiffer ride. They should settle a little.

I put 2.5" HD coils on my 07 Tundra and ended up with a 3.5" lift even with the new steel bumper and winch.

WOW that is diffidently more than I want for sure. I guess I will try to get medium weight springs then?

I don't think you can make an accurate estimate on the amount of lift you'll get with OME leaf springs based on the experience someone had with coil springs on a Tundra. You may get more than the stated 2.5" lift if your old springs have flattened, or if you use longer than stock shackles. No two trucks will be exactly the same.

IIRC, OME offers two FJ40 suspensions, which they describe as Light and Medium/Heavy. The Medium/Heavy spring packs have one more leaf than the Light springs. Light is adequate for most loads. You could always begin with Light springs and later add extra leaves if necessary. They're pretty cheap.

Call one of the MUD vendors and ask for advice. Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters (801-518-3937) has a vast knowledge of OME suspensions and will steer you in the right direction. So will the other MUD vendors. Just pick one and mush on.

i have OME dakkar heavy 2.5" lift, with extended shackles on my 73.
i run full top and doors most of the time, and wheel with it stuffed to the brim with camping gear. ride is kind of harsh empty, but rides quite nice and flexes well with a full load of gear.
