What is so special about OME shocks compared to
the 100’s of other brands?

I don't believe that OMEs are extra special on their own as shocks, but I think it's that OME shocks are engineered to work with OME springs. Both are tailored to a particular vehicle so in the end they make for a very good combination. At least that's my take. . . FWIW.

OME are just Monroe with a slightly different valving. Personally this is the 3rd time I bought OME. The 1st one for Samurai are awesome but the 2nd on Montero are pretty bad so does my current one on my 100 series. My bad I would not buy another OME for IFS vehicle. Your application might be OK with coil spring and solid front axle.

I am in the process in getting a set of KONI. Not availalbe in US but could be special ordered thru any Koni dealer. I priced KONI HEAVY TRACK at $84 a piece. Not much more than OME shocks.

Wanted KONI RAID but they closed down the factory in France and not in production right now. I could not even get pricing on it. P/N could be had at KONI 4X4.com

The only thing I like about OME shocks is the size of their studs. Makes fitting and driving them on an LC80 a lot easier considering the size of the hole in the shock mounts. Ranchos have smaller studs and need an adapter.

These days I use a Gas Monroe and needed an adapter to fit them in. The model I got was ring/ring, but I wanted the 32" extension.

I just hate spending that much on shocks that will only last a year
Living on the west coast sucks, chrome plating doesn’t last long.

I expect shocks to last 5 years as a DD before they get soft. What kind of shocks do you have that are so short lived ?

I'm familiar with Koni's quality build for shocks...but then what springs to use so everything works 'together'?

When I changed my factory Tokico shocks at 94,000 miles (8 years old), they were still in excellent shape and compared quite well to the new ones. I did it as preventative maintenance since I tow heavy and they were $25 apiece and tuned carefully to the vehicle. Rears have gravel guards and they're clearly a well built unit. Just did the same on the new 97 with 134,000 miles and again the factory shock were in good shape. Noted a bit more improvement in vehicle afterwards than with the 93, however. No leaks, chrome still absolutey perfect, and the we lived in Hermosa Beach, CA on the beach with the 93 for a couple years.

The factory shocks I just pulled off my 97 still had good pressure and were not leaking....I dont think they had been replaced at any point.

Koni are adjustable so you could tailor it to your spring and prefference. It would work from OEM spring to the heaviest spring you could find. The rebound are adjustable from 100-200%.

They have 2" longer version called KONI Heavy Track RAID but they the factory in france closed and in the process to move it somewhere else. The price list i found on the internet range from 175-218 Euro so it would be about $150-200 here. Those are very expensive and would not advantage you very much unless you do off road rally or desert racing maybe.

It’s not the brand of shock necessarily Kalawang it’s the climate.
The shaft rusts then the seal goes out, next thing you know driving
a bucking bronco.

Where are you ? It has to be a really bad place to do that to shocks and bushings. The worst place I know is a beach house, but even that wouldn't kill the shocks. It would destroy the car in a year or less, but the shocks would pretty well survive.

I am running Downey springs and Bilstien shocks on my 80. I am very happy with the ride, & they were cheaper.
Ended up w/ about a 4" lift & no leveling problem (stock bumpers).
Just an option for ya.

If you are not lifted it is hard to beat the OEM shocks:
FT: 48511-69435 $36.04
RR: 48531-69417 $35.31
Cheaper through Cdan; above is list

OME are just really good shocks that will last a long time. You pay for that. Koni might be a slightly better shock but can be difficult to get.
