Hi guy's, I had quite a day, I took my damaged new ARB over to my neighbors shop, called "Dinosaur Auto Repair" (been right there since 1946) and used his tools etc. First I pulled the new carrier bearing off of the ring gear side, luckily, George had a nice 2 jaw puller that with minor filing, gripped the inner race just fine without pinching the out cage. I got it off "fairly" easy.

next, I put 'er in the lathe

I heli arc'd (old school term for tig) up the grooves left from the vice jaws, I used 1/16th" 309 stainless, and then turnede the high spots down plus another 1/2 Thousandth, By the way, the air seal nozzle wasn't all that round to start with.

step 3 of locker repair

after I tooled down the high spots plus another 1/2 .000 I polished the air seal land with a thin strip on the crankshaft polisher,...and yes,...I did mic. it before I started on the area that wasn't scored, it was 1.967, It came out looking better than new,...

step 4 in ARB locker repair,...

SO,....here it is all put back together, The copper tubing on a RD124, sure is easier to route than the RD142, and oddl;y enough, I ran it just like the diagram,..and it was exactly the right length, I made sure it snapped easily with the blow gun against the fitting, (neat sound" I will pressure test it with a valve and gauge, and if all is well, I will take it to Ventura 4X4 and check backlash with Reuben the owner.

comment on hopefull fix

I realise that this "MIGHT" work,..but "MIGHT " not, I would imagine Poser is saying, "My god ! what a lot of work" but I am a retired pipe weldor, in the union for 34 years, and worked a lot of nukes, space shuttle work etc. and the worst thing a weldor wants to hear is, "forget it, can't be done" Anyway, at least NOW, I'm an expert bon all the ways NOT to do an air locker, (hard earned experience), Oh by the way, the only thing I could find that was the right OD and ID to re- press on the carrier bearing , was a 2"X 1 1/2" copper bell reducer fitting!!!! just for your information, worked perfect, By the way, the car in the background was an original 57 Mercury cruiser, pretty cool, common sight at "Dinosaur repair" Wish me luck,..and I will certainly admit it if this go's sour,..Randall

I was taught that "if you can't weld it, you can't fix it".

It looks good. Should be a permanent fix.

BTW, I have an '85 Linde "Heliarc 250HF", so the term isn't just old, it is also a current trademark.

Thanks, pin, Actually Heli arc was a Linde trade name from when tig first started and they actually used helium as a tungsten gas shield, In the early 70's nobody called it "Tig" welding

I looked at the RD124 instruction sheet I have (rev 04/07/2005) and it shows cutting the air line to length with a brake line cutter and routing it much closer to the side bearing cap. Seems like it might get munched with it so long. Great job on the repair. Saved a few $.

WHAT??????? You're going to question a self appointed authority on ARB locker set ups?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SHEESH,....how many do I have to destroy to get the respect I DESERVE????
Actually My friend and I looked very closely at the RD124 diagram also, and this is what WE cfame up with. oh well,...Thankyou for sharing Terrx of Santa Clara. are you in a local club?

There was a thread recently about a design change with the RD124 where the air line was moved to the opposite side of the carrier. I wondered if the instructions you were looking at were for the newer design rather than the older one. Not to belabor the point, but something just doesn't look right to me. I'll link in a few photos below of the instructions for the older design.

Oh yeah.. there's lots of great folks and cruisers in the area. I'm not active in any of the local clubs though.

terrx,

OjaiFJ40 has it exactly as pictured in my RD33 manual, the one you posted is for an earlier one, before they changed the way the bulkhead fitting is secured. The older one had also had a securing nut on the inside of the bulkhead fitting the newer one does not, and the latest is different again.

As you mentioned, the latest design has the air line on the ring gear side, and it crosses over the ring gear, here is a link to that post https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/284957-arb-install-question.html#post4445867

Looks like ARB are still trying to find the optimal position/routing/design for it.
