For those who have switched to 5W-30 oil, you might find this of interest.

What was your paradigm?

I like this guy’s stuff but what these oils need to do is too complex for a YouTuber. My takeaway? If I repeat the winter Alaska trip posted a while back I’ll switch to 0w-20.

I have always run the 0W-20 but being in Southern Cali, and doing a lot of desert off roading in rather warm temps, if I should run the thicker oil. I ran 5W-20 in my Tundra for 240,000 miles and that engine ran like new when I traded it on the LC. Maybe worrying for nothing.

Heck, I run 5w30 year round and have never had a challenge with slow starts or anything else. Of course I plug in if it is going to get much below -10/20F

You most likely aren’t doing any real damage, but yes for your uses 5-30 or even 0-30 could be a great fit.

There’s an extensive 5-30 thread about it being approved in most of the rest of the world
